A six-run fifth inning helped the AFL East Risings Stars beat the AFL West Rising Stars, 9-4, in Saturday night action from the Arizona Fall League as winter baseball begins to heat up.
East outfielder and Washington National prospect Brian Goodwin knocked in two runs on the night, including a first-inning solo home run off of Kyle Gibson to get the scoring started early for the two squads. Trading runs in the early frames, the East finally broke the game open with its outburst in the fifth.
Goodwin's double off of the Tampa Bay Rays' C. J. Riefenhauser kept a string of doubles and RBIs going for the East as they got to the middle of the West's bullpen.
Joc Pederson, Ricky Oropesa, Corey Dickerson and David Adams also contributed run-scoring plays in the inning to help the East to the win.
Tony Zych, a Chicago Cubs minor leaguer, collected the win despite surrendering three hits and a run in his two-thirds of an inning worked. The Twins' Michael Tonkin was given the loss after being tagged for four runs in the fifth inning.
