The 2011 Preakness started at a blazing speed thanks to Flashpoint sprinting out early which put favorites Dialed In and Animal Kingdom at the tail end early. Eventual winner, Shackleford, was able to hang in and hold onto second place through the first quarter mile and then things slowed dramatically which allowed the winner to have enough in the tank to hold off the late finishing charge of second-place Animal Kingdom.
The great horse racing blog And Down The Stretch They Come explains:
The splits make it abundantly clear where Shackleford won this race; after a very quick opening quarter, the pace slowed to a crawl of 24.18 and 25.14 for the next two splits. The fourth quarter? 25.21. Fast, slow, slower.
