Saturday night, I made plans to go to downtown Phoenix and catch the game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Chicago Cubs. The game was slated to begin at 5:10 p.m. and my friend and I got off the light rail around 4:10. Instead of going right to the game, we went to Hooter's (classy, I know) to have some food.
Needless to say, we never made it to the baseball game. Maybe it was because our server was beautiful. That, or the TVs were all tuned into the PPV broadcast of UFC 129.
I've never really been interested in MMA before; it hasn't been an event that I planned my time around, and I didn't see the point of watching two guys fight each other.
As the PPV fight began with Ben Henderson facing off against Mark Bocek, it was announced that he was "out of Glendale, Arizona." My ears perked up and I paid some attention -- this was a guy who called the Valley home!
Henderson has huge, powerful legs and is adept at several fighting styles. I was taken aback by how fluid the whole fight was; Bocek was almost able to place Henderson in several formidable holds, but "Smooth" was able to get out of them all.
As the night wore on, I began to exclaim at opportune moments: "he's going for the arm bar!" were my famous last words. That was when I knew that the UFC had finally gotten my attention.
It's no wonder that the UFC is so popular -- these fights are extremely entertaining. I look forward to the next billing, and UFC 130 will be held on May 28th, 2011 in Las Vegas.
