The Masters has long been a staple of the PGA Tour, and is perhaps the most prestigious of all golf tournaments. While for decades Augusta National has been marred by accusations of racism, that hasn't interfered with the gravity of the golf event itself.
Today is the first round of the 2011 Masters, and Phil Mickelson tees off at 1:48 PM eastern time. Mickelson is looking to defend his title after winning the 2010 Masters with a -16 (and more importantly, a -5 in the fourth round to get past Lee Westwood).
Mickelson is an Arizona State University alum, graduating in 1992 after several excellent years golfing for the Sun Devils. He is often considered one of the greatest amateur golfers in NCAA history, earning first team All-American honors in all four of his seasons at ASU.
Phil Mickelson also won three NCAA golf championships, in 1989, 1990 and 1992. He is a hero around these parts, and ASU fans and alumni cheer for his success in every competition.
Stick here for Mickelson updates over the next several days, as Lefty begins his quest for another green jacket in Georgia.
