Star-studded Galaxy Shines In Tempe

Hey Valley of the Sun,

Did you know that one of the heroes of the 2010 U.S. World Cup soccer team was in Tempe today?

↵

Landon Donovan and his Los Angeles Galaxy teammates beat the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps, 2-0, in Major League Soccer preseason action Monday at ASU’s soccer stadium.

The game was labeled “closed door,” but they let me in so how closed could it have been?

Donovan played the entire 90 minutes. Afterward, he and another Galaxy star, Juan Pablo Angel, left quickly to catch a flight back to L.A. They were not going to play in Tuesday’s scheduled rematch against Vancouver, so they were excused to go home a day before the rest of the team.

David Beckham, American soccer’s favorite Englishman, was not present. He’s finishing training with English club Tottenham Hotspur and will be with the Galaxy later in the week.
