National Signing Day: Breaking Down The ASU Recruits

New, 1 comment

Today was a hectic day for college football, as National Signing Day often can be. While the Arizona St. Sun Devils failed to attract a large or immensely talented group of players, they did fill important holes in their depth chart. More importantly, it appears as though Dennis Erickson has finally recruited some highly talented quarterbacks.

Mike Bercovici and Michael Eubank are both talented signal callers from California, with Eubank joining Vontaze Burfict and several other Sun Devils out of Centennial High School in Corona.

Eubank is the wild card of this signing class; he has all the tools of a scrambling QB with a strong arm and incredible build at 6'5" and 220 pounds. After a year or two of seasoning, Eubank should be ready to play in the Pac-12.

Out of the 14 total recruits that signed the dotted line today, six of them are either offensive or defensive linemen. This is an important step for a team that needs to protect its skill players and shore up the running defense even further. Mo Latu is a local product that can play both sides of the ball. He weighs over 300 pounds and will be a lot to handle for the opposition.

Josh Hubner is considered by Scout.com to be the top-ranked junior college punter in the nation, and has experiencing holding kicks (a responsibility that former punter Trevor Hankins took care of usually). Expect Hubner to be an important part of this team come the fall.

It's easy to underestimate this recruiting class, especially considering there's no "sure thing" among them. But if you consider that the team from last season is returning nearly intact, there's no reason to recruit a glut of youth this spring. It's better for the team that they handpick a group that will fit the goals of the program. Besides, it's hard to land a five star recruit when you haven't been to a bowl since 2007.

Come the fall, the Sun Devils are expected to be a player in the Pac-12 South, and these recruits will only improve that positioning. Bring on the season!
