It is blasphemy for someone who writes about sports for a living to mock sports fans, but seriously people, are we this desperate that we are following the moment-by-moment decisions of high school kids across the country? It's all just part of our American Idol culture where we value picking and being picked over actual performance on the field. National Signing Day? How about National Sock Picking Day? Or National Focus Too Much Attention On High School Kids Day?
↵Obviously, it's a big deal for the big money schools to land the big time recruits. It is certainly interesting to find out where our local star high school athletes decide play their next few years. It's news. But is it really The Decision?
↵These are kids we are talking about and they are making personal decisions based on a variety of factors. Which school has the most Nobel Prize winners on its faculty. What is the university's graduation rate for student athletes. Does the school have Phil Knight backing it so they can afford NFL-level facilities and new uniforms each week. Which coach can help me make the most money once this charade of being an amateur athlete is over.
↵These are the things that really matter.
↵For those that care about and profit from the money machine that is college football, this is a big day and congratulations are in order for those schools that manipulated the system to attract the top prospects in the country to come pretend to study in their halls.
↵But lets not pretend that this is anything more than a glorified beauty pageant played out on an uneven playing field.
