Arizona State University Weekly Sports Recap And Look Ahead

A look around the Arizona State University sporting landscape beyond football and basketball.

The Arizona State University major sports teams had a tough week last week. Both the football and basketball teams suffered defeats including the humiliating Sun Devils loss to rival U of A on Saturday. However, some of the smaller sports had success and this week Sun Devil Athletics will be on a national spotlight has multiple teams leave their Tempe home base to travel for holiday tournaments. 

Here's a quick look around the Sun Devil's sporting landscape:

The Arizona State women's cross country team participated in the 2011 NCAA Women's Cross Country Championships this week. The event was held November 21 in Terre Haute, Indiana. ASU placed 31st overall as Georgetown won the event. It was ASU's 13th national championship appearance in 14 years. Freshman Shelby Houlihan was ASU's top finisher as she placed 93rd overall and 8th among freshman. 

The Arizona State women's basketball team is off to San Juan, Puerto Rico, this week to participate in the San Jaun Shootout holiday tournament. The Lady Devis play Illinois on November 25 and Rutgers on November 26. ASU is 3-0 in 2011 with wins over: UC Riverside, Colorado State and Boston College. 

The Arizona State wrestling team is off to Troy, New York, to participate in the Journeyman/ASICS Northeast Duels. ASU will wrestle against: Army, Lehigh, Penn and Binghamton. The duels begin on November 26. 

The Arizona State volleyball team will look to do what the football team couldn't; get a victory against the University of Arizona. ASU hosts U of A on November 26. ASU is 8-21 on the season and 5-8 at home. 

Player Of The Week: Senior guard Kimberly Brandon- Kimberly scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half of Sunday's win over Boston College (1-2). So far on the season, Kimberly is averaging 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and two steals a game.

Must Watch Of The Week: Anytime the Wildcats roll into town, it's a marquee event. The volleyball team lost 1-3 Tuesday in Tuscon but the will look to end the season strong and exact some revenge on the those pesky in-state rivals.
