The NASCAR Nationwide series provides a warm-up on Saturday before the big Sprint Cup Series Kobalt Tools 500 race on Sunday. The qualifying round for the Wypall 200 was held Saturday morning with Aric Almirola edging out Carl Edwards to earn the pole position for the race. Almirola recorded the fastest time with a speed of 132.91 and a time of 28.086.
Almirola runs a Chevrolet for the JR Motorsports teams and his car is owned by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. He's currently ranked fourth with 1039 points and has one win in 71 career starts.
Between the changes to the track at Phoenix International Raceway and the shifting weather conditions, drivers are reporting issues with grip. The Sprint Cup race drivers are saying they are going to be watching Saturday's race closely to try and get a sense of what to expect on Sunday.
The Wydall 200 Nationwide race on Saturday is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on ESPN 2.
