Congratulations to Dan Huson and his 4-1 record and 1.85 ERA in six starts since coming to the D-backs in the deal that sent Edwin Jackson to the White Sox.
Not bad, young man. Not bad.
Official release:
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Daniel Hudson has been voted the August recipient of the Gillette presents National League Rookie of the Month Award.
Hudson posted a 4-1 mark with a 1.85 ERA over six starts during August. The 23-year-old right-hander led N.L. rookies in wins and ranked first among all Major League rookie pitchers with 43.2 innings pitched and 42 strikeouts.
Daniel allowed just 30 hits with eight walks while holding opposing hitters to a .195 batting average. In just his fourth career start on August 1st against the Mets at Citi Field, Hudson tossed a career-high 8.0 innings and surrendered just one earned run on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts in a 14-1 Arizona win. The start also marked Daniel's first appearance as a D-back after the Chicago White Sox dealt him in exchange for Edwin Jackson on July 30th.
The 2008 fifth-round selection (by Chicago) recorded a career-best 10 strikeouts in his only defeat of the month on August 17th against the N.L. Central-leading Cincinnati Reds. Hudson recorded eight strikeouts in the first 3.0 innings, becoming the first rookie pitcher to accomplish the feat since Rick Ankiel did so for the Cardinals on July 27, 2000 against Arizona. Hudson, who also collected three RBI in the loss, became the third pitcher this season to collect three RBI and strike out at least nine batters in the same game (Adam Wainwright and Josh Johnson).
Prior to 2010, only two pitchers (Dontrelle Willis - 2006 and Randy Wolf - 2009) had accomplished the feat over the previous 10 seasons (courtesy of Elias). A product of Old Dominion University, Hudson tossed at least 7.0 innings in each of his six starts and allowed no more than two runs in five of the six.
Others rookies receiving votes included Atlanta's Jason Heyward (.299, 5 HR, 14 RBI, .536 SLG); Neil Walker (.306, 3 HR, 22 RBI, 7 2B, 2 3B) and Daniel McCutchen (1-0, 1.00 ERA, 10 G, 18.0 IP, 12 SO) of the Pirates; Starlin Castro (.336, 9 RBI, 11 2B, 19 R) of the Cubs; Hudson's Arizona teammate Barry Enright (3-0, 2.05 ERA, 30.2 IP, 14 SO); Kenley Jansen (0-0, 0.84 ERA, 10 G, 10.2 IP, 15 SO) of the Dodgers; Houston's Chris Johnson (.306, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 7 2B); and Washington's Ian Desmond (.347, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 6 2B). Hudson will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
