That’s the word from Chase Field tonight, as the designation allowed the Diamondbacks to add outfielder Ryan Church to the 25-man active roster.
Gutierrez, 0-6 with a 6.69 ERA, has three saves for Arizona but has struggled overall. He’d been seeing team medical personnel about his shoulder for the past week, manager Kirk Gibson said.
Gutierrez pitched a perfect inning Monday night, however, so this kind of smells of an NBA-type of DL move where a guy goes on the injured list just to make room for someone else even though the injury is either very minor or practically non-existent.
Aaron Heilman, he of the team-leading four saves, is most likely to close games, Gibson said. The D-backs are carrying 11 pitchers on their 25-man roster now.
Church is active for the first time after being traded from Pittsburgh July 31. He is not in tonight’s starting lineup.
