TANGELA SMITH TO BREAK WNBA RECORD FOR CAREER GAMES PLAYED

Mercury forward/center Tangela Smith will surpass Vickie Johnson on the WNBA career games played list with her 411th career game on Friday at Indiana. The 13-year veteran ranks in the top five in three WNBA career statistical categories including minutes played (fourth) and points (fifth) and ranks sixth in total rebounds.

This season, Smith became just the fourth player in league history to record 4,500 points and 2,000 rebounds and on July 3 she surpassed Sheryl Swoopes for fifth all-time on the WNBA career scoring list and surpassed Margo Dydek for sixth all-time on the rebounding list.

Smith joined the Mercury in 2007 as part of a draft-day trade and has played in every game in three of her four seasons with the club (missed the last nine games of 2008 with a knee injury). She has started all 122 games she has played in the last four years.

A key contributor to both of the Mercury's championships in 2007 and 2009, Smith can help the team return to the postseason tonight. The Mercury can clinch its third playoff berth in the last four seasons with a win tonight or a loss by either San Antonio (vs. Tulsa) or Minnesota (at Washington).
