Despite controlling the game for most of the first half and going into the break up 18, the Mercury ultimately lost the game and any chance at obtaining the Western Conference’s top seed.
Behind Lauren Jackson’s 33 points and 11 rebounds, the Storm had a strong third quarter, outscoring Phoenix 24-8 and taking advantage of the Mercury’s poor shooting. In one stretch across the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth, Phoenix had missed 17 straight shots.
Guard Diana Taurasi led the team with 27 points, though only shot 8-for-18. She was backed up by 19 points from DeWanna Bonner, but relatively quiet games from Candice Dupree (12 points, five rebounds) and Penny Taylor (eight points, seven rebounds, six assists) didn’t help matters.
With the loss, Phoenix falls 11 games behind the league-leading Storm. However, they remain in second place ahead of the 8-15 San Antonio Silver Stars.
