Phoenix Suns training camp preview: Wesley Johnson's "clean slate"

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Phoenix Suns forward Wesley Johnson discusses his role with a new team, his familiarity with Michael Beasley and the "bust" label.

One of the many highlights of an active Suns offseason was their three-team trade with the New Orleans Hornets and Minnesota Timberwolves that landed Phoenix forward Wesley Johnson and a 2013 protected first round draft pick.

Johnson has failed to live up to the expectations that come with being the fourth overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft in his brief tenure with the Minnesota Timberwolves. But now as a key member of a revamped Suns roster, Johnson sees this as an opportunity for a fresh start:

Johnson will be battling Jared Dudley along with newcomers Michael Beasley and P.J. Tucker for playing time as the Suns' swingman. Johnson has averaged 7.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists on 39.8% shooting over his first two years in the NBA.

If the six-foot-seven slasher wants to successfully carve a consistent role in this rotation though, he'll have to improve mostly on his three point shooting. Johnson averaged a decent 35.6% beyond the arc his rookie year before dropping down to 31.4% last season during his sophomore slump.
