NBA Playoff Picture: Loss To Spurs Doesn't Sink Suns Just Yet

The Phoenix Suns suffered a tough loss on Saturday night to the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs, true to their track record this season, trounced the Spurs, 105-91. Although the loss drops the Suns 1.5 games behind the cutoff line for playoff berths in the Western Conference, there is still hope of making the postseason.

The Sun are now 31-29 and are chasing the current No. 7 and No. 8 seeds in the conference, respectively held by the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets. Both the Rockets and Nuggets hold 32-27 records and are 11.5 games behind the first-place Oklahoma City Thunder. The Suns are currently 13 games back and have six gamed remaining, including a game against the Nuggets.

The Nuggets and Rockets have a home-and-home two-game series against one another on Sunday and Monday, so the Suns should be rooting for Houston to take both games. This way, the Suns could potentially slip ahead of the Nuggets with a win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday and just hold pace until they play Denver next Saturday. That seems to be the most direct route for the Suns, although there are alternatives.

The loss to the Spurs on Sunday was not the end of the world, but it does make the margin for error tighter. Phoenix will be watching the home-and-home between the Nuggets and Rockets closely.

Phoenix Suns Trounced By San Antonio Spurs 105-91

Playing on the road against the San Antonio Spurs is bad enough, but the Phoenix Suns had it extra tough. They were coming off of an emotional win against the Houston Rockets the night before. Saturday's game was also their third in four nights and eighth in 11 days, even of those on the road.

Phoenix came out of the gate looking the part. They managed only four points in the first six minutes, falling behind 21-4. With 6:06 left n the first quarter, because of the play, head coach Alvin Gentry pulled out the entire starting lineup and put in the second unit.

Steve Nash did not come back into the game. He suffered some sort of hip injury.

At the end of the first quarter, the Spurs led 35-13 and the rest of game sort of just happened. The Suns made a late run with a 10-0 run in the last five minutes, but the game was already all but decided. The final score was 105-91

The Suns were led in scoring by Sebastian Telfair with 21 points. He shot a career-high 21 times. The only other players in double figure were Michael Redd with 13 and Markieff Morris with 10.

For the Spurs, four players were in double figures, led by Tim Duncan's 19. He only had to play 23 minutes to score that amount.

It was clear that after the early deficit the team conceded and started getting ready for Portland on Monday for the final stretch.

The Suns next play on Monday at home against the Portland Trailblazers.
