Arizona State Football: House of Sparky talks with ASU DC Paul Randolph

Matt Kartozian-US PRESSWIRE

SB Nation's ASU blog caught up with Sun Devils defensive coordinator Paul Randolph this week.

The Arizona State Sun Devils will host the UCLA Bruins on Saturday in an important Pac-12 South battle, and ASU will be looking to shore up its defense after Oregon had little trouble moving the ball last Thursday. UCLA's offense is run by a familiar face, so there shouldn't be too many surprises.

Brad Denny of Arizona State blog House of Sparky spoke with ASU defensive coordinator Paul Randolph about the game against Oregon and the upcoming UCLA contest. Randolph talked about what it be like to face former ASU offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone, now doing the same job for the Bruins:

HoS: How much of an advantage do you think your players will have facing a familiar Noel Mazzone offense on Saturday?

PR: I think there is familiarity amongst both staffs, no question about that, with him having spent so much time here. For us, the most important thing is us just working on us, and that's the biggest thing and getting better every single day.

The UCLA offense has shown improvement under Mazzone, but the Sun Devils seem to be doing just fine moving the ball without him. Having seen each other's schemes in practice every day in the past, the familiarity advantage may end up being a wash.

The Sun Devils need a win on Saturday to keep pace with the USC Trojans, who lead the South Division at 4-1. The loss to Oregon was ASU's first in league play. UCLA will also be hungry for a victory, as the Bruins are 2-2 and still have a shot at the division crown.
