The Arizona Wildcats improved to 3-0 on Saturday after a dominating 56-0 victory over the South Carolina State Bulldogs.
The Wildcats were dominant on both sides of the ball, finishing with almost 700 yards of total offense while holding the Bulldogs to eight first downs for the whole game. From the Arizona Desert Storm blog:
The Bulldogs only earned eight first downs and didn't get into UA territory until over nine minutes remained in the third quarter. S.C. State compiled 152 total yards as they only gained on average of 3.6 yards per pass attempt and 2.2 on rushes.
After a Week 1 scare against Toledo, the Wildcats have put up over 50 points in consecutive games. New quarterback Matt Scott continues to impress, throwing for 288 yards and three touchdowns against the Bulldogs.
Arizona will get a major test next week when they travel to Oregon to take on the highly ranked Ducks. As one blogger notes, the Wildcats may just have a fighting chance.
Looking toward Oregon, the foundation has been set for Arizona to compete. The Ducks' defense has been known to give up points to Arizona in the past few years, and the Wildcats' own defense has shown that, if they aren't the deepest or most athletic unit, they'll be in the right spots on the field and make the tackles they should.
That should give the Wildcats a good chance. And that's more than you could've said a month ago.

The Associated Press released its college football rankings Sunday morning and, to no one's surprise, the Arizona Wildcats were given a bit of a boost. Arizona is undefeated under Rich Rodriguez and, because of that, they continue to find themselves slowly moving up the polls.
The Wildcats were expected to defeat South Carolina State on Saturday and they did that with flying colors, allowing them to move up from 24 to 22 in the AP poll.
The only three teams ranked behind them were unranked last week, so their status is obviously a bit contentious, but they'll likely keep moving up if they're able to keep picking up victories.

So maybe this thing with Rich Rodriguez will work out after all. The head coach, in his first year with the No. 24 Arizona Wildcats, has them at a 3-0 after demolishing South Carolina State 56-0. In the past two games, Arizona has outscored their opponents 115 to 38.
Much of the success can be attributed to senior quarterback Matt Scott. Scott has proven to be a double-threat for the Wildcats by beating teams with his arm and his leg. In three quarters against SC State, Scott had 30 completions for 310 yards and three touchdowns. This was in addition to his nine rushes for 61 yards and one touchdown.
Scott wasn't the only one providing the offense. Daniel Jenkins ran for 76 yard on 12 carries followed on the stat sheet by Ka'Deem Carey with 13 rushes for 71 yards. Jenkins and Carey had one touchdown each.
Dan Buckner and Tyler Slavin were two of Scott's favorite targets in the game. Buckner had seven receptions for 92 yards and one touchdown. Slavin caught five balls for 70 yards and one touchdown.
Now comes the real test to see what the Wildcats are made of. Next weekend, they travel up to Oregon to face the No. 4 Ducks in their first Pac-12 game of the season.

Arizona doesn't get a lot of attention in the Pac-12. If they keep running up scores, they just might turn some heads. At the half, the Wildcats are up on the Bulldogs of South Carolina State, 28-0. It's going to be a long night for the Bulldogs if their defense doesn't wake up.
Matt Scott is having a really good night and it's only half time. The Arizona quarterback has thrown for 197 yards with two touchdowns. As if that wasn't enough, he rushed for 61 yards with one touchdown. Scott is currently second on the team in rushing behind Ka'Deem Carey with 71 yards and one TD.
Arizona isn't being carried by their ground game, their receivers are sharing the load. Austin Hill leads the Wildcats with five receptions for 57 yards.
The Wildcats look to go up 3-0 in their first year under new head coach, the embattled Rich Rodriguez.

The No. 24 Arizona Wildcats are off to a great start to their 2012 campaign and will play host to the South Carolina State Bulldogs. The Wildcats are out to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Arizona outgunned Oklahoma State last week, 59-38, but had to use overtime to take out Toledo in their Week 1 matchup. Both of those victories were enough to sneak inside the top 25, now looking to stay there for the rest of the season.

No one in the college football world is giving the South Carolina State Bulldogs much of a chance against the Arizona Wildcats this weekend. And why would they? Essentially a Division-II school, the Dawgs are coming off a two-touchdown loss to Bethune Cookman at home and are facing a team that scored 59 points last weekend. The oddsmakers in Vegas haven't even set a betting line on the game.
As our Wildcats blog, AZ Desert Swarm, details, a win this weekend for South Carolina St. would not only be unexpected, but historic:
No MEAC program has ever beaten a BCS conference opponent, though the conference only began emphasizing such match-ups in recent seasons. MEAC members are scheduling non-conference dates with BCS conference programs both for the sizable paychecks, and for exposure to top tier football.
This philosophy has generated scrutiny this season, the result of Savannah State's 84-0 and 55-0 losses at Oklahoma State and Florida State.SSU is not indicative of the MEAC as a whole, though; the Tigers are perennial conference cellar dwellers, hoping to buoy the athletic department's finances with these trips.
Though winless in FBS games, conference members have built from them in the past. Norfolk State gave West Virginia a handful in the first half of their meeting last season, actually leading the Mountaineers at halftime. NSU used the loss as a springboard to the MEAC title and a bid in the FCS Playoffs.
None want to be the conference's first BCS trophy. For UA to avoid the pitfall, the Wildcats simply must take the field without complacency from reaching the Top 25 and handling the Bulldog defense early.
Here's hoping the coaching staff will have the Wildcats ready to go this weekend as a showdown with Oregon is just eight days away. Kickoff from Arizona Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night.
