Arizona vs. Stanford: Banged up Matt Scott limiting run game

Rick Scuteri-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Arizona quarterback Matt Scott's injuries will limit his threat to run Rich Rodriguez's zone read offense.

Arizona Wildcats quarterback Matt Scott has suffered two injuries in the past two games, and while neither will keep him out of Saturday's game at Stanford, both have put limitations on how he'll be used in Rich Rodriguez's option attack.

The dual-threat senior won't be used as liberally in the running game against the Cardinal this week, Rodriguez told Ryan Finley of the Arizona Daily Star.

"I think Matt understands that we're trying to protect him," Rodriguez said, "but at the same time, we're trying to run our system."

Scott told the Star that he's received treatment this week and is feeling better.

Considering Arizona's dependency on a healthy Scott leading the passing attack, it's likely almost every run will come from running backs like Ka'Deem Carey. Carey has quietly started the season well, averaging 107.9 yards per game, and he even had a big outing last week against Oregon State's stout run defense.

With Scott unlikely to get many run calls until he's healthy, Arizona will begin to use more multi-back offensive sets to keep defenses guessing.
