Taylor Kelly is ASU's new starting quarterback, a decision which drew plenty of reaction from Sun Devil fans.

Arizona State's Taylor Kelly won the Sun Devils' quarterback competition Tuesday when he was named the starter by head coach Todd Graham and the surprise decision drew plenty of reaction from Sun Devil fans.

Over at SB Nation's Arizona State blog House Of Sparky, Brad Denny illustrated just how big of a surprise this was.

Taylor Kelly: starting quarterback for the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Back when the team's fall camp opened, if you thought that phrase would hold true for the team's season opener, you were either a) lying b) a friend or relative of Kelly c) squandering your ESP on ASU football instead of cleaning up in Vegas or d) Cory Williams.

So how did Kelly win the job? Well, it all came down to protecting the football.

How did he do it? By following the Graham's "One Simple Rule to Quarterback My ASU Sun Devils".

"The quarterback that will play will be the one that takes care of the football," said Graham at ASU Media Day. "We have one mission: own the football."

And own it Kelly did.

While the decision to go with Kelly may have come as a surprise to most, some House of Sparky commentors like the move.

While TK doesn't have berco's gun nor is his physically imposing like Eubank, he has plenty of talent. He runs well, his passes are accurate and most importantly his pocket presence and decision making are excellent. He has proven through camp that he can throw the deep ball. There really is no weakness to his game. While he is on the field all options are available. He is ASU best chance to win, now and in the future." - Sorael

"Smartest move to make...
...you don't want to put the strength of the team in a hole with youthful mistakes during the season. You want to play Eubank in scripted situations to keep his mistakes at a minimum while he develops enough to take over the offense." - AlabamaJammer
