College Football Rankings, Week 5: LSU Takes Over Top Spot With Big Win Over WV; ASU 25th After Beating USC

College football rankings for Week 5 are out and we have a new king of the pile. The AP poll moved the LSU Tigers to the number one spot while USA Today Coaches Poll has them second. LSU had the big win of the weekend with an impressive 47-21 victory over West Virginia who came into the game ranked 16th and left 22nd. The Oklahoma Sooners (2) got down early but managed to pull ahead of the Missouri Tigers and finish with a 38-28 win while Alabama (3) did their thing with a 38-14 win over previously 14th-ranked Arkansas (18).

In the Pac-12, Oregon (9) took care of the poor Arizona Wildcats while Stanford (6) had a bye week but dropped a spot behind Oklahoma St. (5). ASU knocked USC out of the rankings and took over No. 25 in the AP poll but isn't ranked by the Coaches Poll. ASU was the only unranked team to beat a ranked team this week.

The win over Pac-12 South division rival Southern Cal will be a signature moment for the Sun Devils season but only if they can follow it up with consistent play in the next few weeks. ASU played a very good game on both sides of the ball and more importantly didn't do anything to shoot themselves in the foot.

The Devils had just six penalties (Dennis Erickson said one was on him) and no turnovers. They didn't even hurt themselves with the kicking game which was a nice treat. Not only did ASU snap an 11-year losing streak to USC but did so in convincing fashion that should (we hope) build confidence moving forward.

ASU hosts the lowly Oregon State Beavers (0-3, 0-1) next week and then follows that up with a big road game in Utah (2-1, 0-1) which very well could decide the Pac-12 South Division.

Arizona continued their ridiculous schedule with their third top-10 ranked opponent in three weeks. Predictably, they were run off the field by the score of 56-31. The Wildcats travel to Los Angeles next week to face USC.
