3-Run 5th Rallies D-backs To 6-2 Win Over Padres

Justin Upton doubled and scored twice, rookie Adam Eaton tripled and drove in a run and starter Trevor Cahill pitched six strong innings, as the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to defeat the San Diego Padres 4-2 on Wednesday night.

The Padres put two runs on the board with two out in the fourth inning. Cahill had walked Carlos Quentin and Yonder Alonso. They were both driven in with consecutive hits by Will Venable and John Baker.

But Arizona would get one back in the bottom of the inning when Justin Upton and Miguel Montero hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning. Montero would be left stranded at second when Volquez got Paul Goldschidt and jason Kubel to fly out and struck out Ryan Wheeler.

They would take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. John McDonald singled to lead off the inning and Cahill sacrificed him to second. Adam Eaton then picked up his first big league RBI when he tripled to left-center. Eaton would then immediately score when Edison Volquez balked. Then, with two outs, Upton doubled for the second time, Montero was hit by a pitch and Paul Goldschmidt doubled home Upton.

Arizona got two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, when Ryan Wheeler tripled home Miguel Montero, who was hit by a pitch, and then scored himself on a throwing error on the play.

Cahill would come out after six innings, having allowed five hits and two runs, striking out four and walking four.

The bullpen would do the rest. Brad Ziegler, David Hernandez and Matt Lindstrom would pitch a combined three scoreless innings.

Padres starter Volquez pitched six innings in a losing effort, falling to 10-11 on the season. He allowed four runs on eight hits, striking out five.

Cahill picked up the win, improving to 12-11.

The two teams will play Thursday afternoon, with Arizona trying to sweep the series.
