D-backs Win Trevor Bauer's Debut, Chris Young The Hero Against Braves

Trevor Bauer lasted just four innings in his Major League debut, but the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied late to claim a 3-2 victory over the Braves to avoid a series sweep. Bauer labored through his four innings with 76 pitches, allowing two runs to score while working in and out of trouble. He allowed five hits and walked three, striking out three in the process.

It was a very warm night in Atlanta and the opposing hitters were making Bauer work in every at-bat, so him departing early really wasn't a surprise. There were no reports of an injury.

The Braves led 2-0 heading into the sixth inning, but a two-run double from Jason Kubel tied the game. Against Craig Kimbrel, who is probably the best reliever in all of baseball right now, Chris Young belted a solo homer in the top of the ninth to give the D-backs a 3-2 lead. It was CY's second homer in as many days, and the first Kimbrel has surrendered all year.

JJ Putz came in and worked a perfect ninth inning to close the game out.

Trevor Bauer Called Up By Arizona Diamondbacks, Set For MLB Debut Against Braves

Well, that didn't take long.

After being taken third overall in the first year player draft just one year ago, the Arizona Diamondbacks have called up pitching phenom Trevor Bauer to the Show, making his major league debut Thursday night against the Atlanta Braves.

At 21 years, 164 days old, Bauer becomes the third youngest pitcher to make his first Major League start in a D-backs' uniform behind Edgar Gonzalez (20 years, 98 days on June 1, 2003 at San Diego Padres) and Oscar Villarreal (21 years, 127 days on April 8, 2003 at Los Angeles Dodgers).

Bauer last start for the Aces was on Sunday in Salt Lake City, tossing 2.2 innings of one-run ball on 2 hits, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts before being pulled in consideration for Thursday's start. In 16 combined outings between Reno and Double-A Mobile, he was 11-1 with a 2.23 ERA (23 ER in 93.0 IP) and .220 opponents average with 48 walks and 116 strikeouts.

In a corresponding roster move the D-backs sent Josh Bell back to Reno. He hit just .173 (9-for-52) with 2 doubles, a homer and 4 RBI in 21 games since being recalled on May 21.

That's right folks. It's official.

Comeback Falls Short, Road Woes Continue For D-backs In 6-4 Loss To Braves

On a day of plentiful player news and movement, the Arizona Diamondbacks failed to take advantage of the upheaval above them in the NL West standings and lost a second straight game to the Atlanta Braves, this one 6-4, at Turner Field Wednesday night.

Jason Heyward hit a solo home run in the first inning off D-backs starter Trevor Cahill, and the Braves tacked on three more runs in the fifth on a walk, a single, a throwing error by Cahill, two more walks and a pair of sacrifice flies.

Atlanta's Tommy Hanson handled Arizona with relative ease until the seventh inning, giving up two hits in the sixth with Justin Upton reaching third base. But Hanson struck out Jason Kubel to end that inning.

Chipper Jones hit a home run just as the strains of his at-bat song, Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train," faded out with the first pitch he saw in bottom of the sixth. That came after a walk, and made it 6-0. Cahill's night was over.

The Diamondbacks had scored just one run on their last 36 innings played on the road, dating back to games on their last road trip to Anaheim to play the L.A. Angels. That was until Ryan Roberts feasted on a fastball up from Hanson and took it over the wall in left field for a three-run homer to cut the Braves lead in half.

That was all for Hanson after 6 1/3 innings, but the Diamondbacks weren't done even though they couldn't come all the way back.

They certainly tried. Chris Young greeted relief pitcher Jonny Venters with a pinch-hit home run, Young's sixth of the season and first ever pinch-hit home run. It was also his first blast since April 16, before he had to go on the disabled list.

The Diamondbacks got runners on first and second with one out in the eighth against pitcher Eric O'Flaherty, but Miguel Montero hit into a 4-6-3 double play on which Braves second baseman Dan Uggla made a sliding stop of Montero's sharp grounder.

The D-backs are back to .500 (37-37) and five games behind co-leaders Los Angeles and San Francisco, with rookie starting pitcher Trevor Bauer (11-1 in 16 minor-league starts this season) to make his highly-anticipated major-league debut Thursday against the Braves.

Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew's first at-bat in almost a year was a ground ball out to second base. But at least he's back, and he looked pretty excited to be back in the D-backs' dugout before the game. Drew fielded his first ground ball in the third inning and made a routine play, and got his first hit in almost a year of ankle rehab with a bloop single on which he hustled to second base on an error in the outfield.

Diamondbacks Injury Update: Daniel Hudson Might Need Tommy John Surgery

Bad news for Diamondbacks fans. Arizona pitcher Daniel Hudson is going to be out for quite some time. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic has more.

Hudson's agent, Andrew Lowenthal, said his client will seek a second opinion, likely with renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala.

Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers told KTAR today that Hudson has a "100 percent tear" of the UCL, which would require the ligament replacement surgery named after former pitcher Tommy John.

Tommy John Surgery is always a long sentence for a baseball pitcher. It usually means you'll be out for a year and possibly more. Hudson's had trouble this season regardless as Arizona's number two pitcher, so this little bit of news is the icing on the cake on a year of terrible. Hudson also had shoulder problems earlier that put them on the DL.

Hudson departed early in his start against the Braves on Tuesday, and said afterwards he had been struggling with elbow issues for awhile. Hudson was placed on the disabled list earlier today before the announcement of a torn UCL were reported.

Diamondbacks Vs. Braves: Hudson To DL, Stephen Drew Activated, Corbin Called Up, Starting Lineups

The Arizona Diamondbacks will try to even the series against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, but they will have a slightly different roster and lineup to do so. Shortstop Stephen Drew makes his 2012 debut, having been activated from the disabled list. Pitcher Daniel Hudson, removed from his start on Tuesday with an injury, was placed on the disabled list.

The team also made two other roster moves. Reliever Jonathan Albaladejo was optioned back to Triple-A Reno and left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin was recalled. Corbin will be used out of the bullpen for now. Josh Collmenter will start in Hudson's spot for now, at least until after the All-Star Break.

The team elected to go with an extra position player for Wednesday's game with Drew's return. However, with Trevor Bauer slated to start on Thursday and still in the minor league roster, there will be a roster move forthcoming. It is believed that infielder Josh Bell will get sent down as he has options available.

Here are the lineups for Wednesday's game:

Diamondbacks:

  1. Gerardo Parra, CF
  2. Stephen Drew, SS
  3. Justin Upton, RF
  4. Jason Kubel, LF
  5. Paul Goldschmidt, 1B
  6. Miguel Montero, C
  7. Aaron Hill, 2B
  8. Ryan Roberts, 3B
  9. Trevor Cahill, P

Braves:

  1. Michael Bourn, CF
  2. Jason Heyward, RF
  3. Martin Prado, LF
  4. Brian McCann, C
  5. Dan Uggla, 2B
  6. Chipper Jones, 3B
  7. Freddie Freeman, 1B
  8. Andrelton Simmons, SS
  9. Tommie Hanson

Daniel Hudson Was At Risk For Injury, Predicted One Writer

The Arizona Diamondbacks have struggled this season with injuries, and injuries to key players. Stephen Drew will play for the first time this season, Chris Young went down with a shoulder injury when he was one of the hottest hitters in baseball and Daniel Hudson missed time earlier in the season with a shoulder issue.

Now he is sidelined with a supposed elbow injury that will keep him out of action indefinitely.

According to Tom Verducci from SI.com, this should be no surprise. He wrote a column last January that warned of the pitchers at risk of injury this season, based on a theory that pitchers under 25 years old who increase their innings pitched from year to the next by at least 30 tend to get hurt more often.

Hudson made that list:

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson brings an old-school competitiveness to the dugout. Arizona's starters threw more innings than any rotation except Philadelphia's. Hudson pitched well down the stretch and Arizona was trying to win a World Series, so Gibson had no need to curtail Hudson's work.

Whether his injuries are related to his workload, that has yet to be determined. And predicting injuries is a very imperfect science, as bodies are built differently. Some pitchers never get hurt, no matter what they do. Others seem to be fragile.

This situation may come up again a year from now with Wade Miley. He pitched a combined 169.2 innings in 2011. He will likely surpass 200 this year, thus increasing his workload by more than 30. However, in 2013, he will be 26, so he should be off the at-risk list.

The D-backs certainly this is not the case, neither are they hoping for anything serious for Hudson. If they are to make a run to and possibly through the playoffs, they will need Hudson healthy and effective. He has struggled with both this year.

Daniel Hudson Injury: Elbow Pain Sidelines Diamondbacks Starting Pitcher Indefinitely

The Arizona Diamondbacks suffered a tough blow on Tuesday night, losing young righty Daniel Hudson to an elbow injury. Hudson was just a few starts removed from a shoulder impingement, and he admitted after the game that his elbow had been bugging him for quite some time. This came as news to manager Kirk Gibson, who was clearly worried about Hudson's health moving forward.

The D-backs will have Hudson undergo an MRI on Wednesday, and the team will evaluate the situation once the results are in. Here's a bit of both comforting and concerning news for Arizona.

It's important not to jump to conclusions, but the situation really does seem ugly if you're a D-backs fan. A shoulder injury is tough for any pitcher to overcome, but now an elbow issue in addition to the shoulder problems will be daunting for Hudson to overcome.

As for Arizona's rotation plans moving forward, Patrick Corbin was scratched from his start in Triple-A Reno tonight. He has pitched well in recent weeks. The club could also send Josh Collmenter back to the rotation after pitching lights-out in the bullpen.

Arizona Diamondbacks Fall In Hole Early, Lose To Atlanta Braves 8-1 To Open Road Trip

It was a rough day from the start for the Arizona Diamondbacks as they fell behind early to the Atlanta Braves and were unable to claw their way back against the crafty Tim Hudson. His counterpart, Daniel Hudson (no relation), had a poor day on the mound and ended up leaving in the bottom of the second after calling the trainer out for assistance.

The team reports that tightness in his right forearm was the reason for his early exit. The severity of the injury has not been disclosed, but many have speculated that a forearm injury is often a mask for some type of elbow injury, which may force Hudson to the disabled list for some time.

Before Hudson left the game, he was struggling on the mound. He allowed 4 runs (and was charged one more after leaving the game) four extra base hits, one home run and seven hits. Josh Collmenter came in to the game in relief, but by that time, the game was essentially out of reach. Daniel Hudson's ERA has now ballooned to 7.35 on the year.

Josh Collmenter came in and allowed no more runs in four innings pitched. Mike Zagurski, Jonathan Albaladejo (who struggled mightily, allowing two earned runs and being called for a balk) and Craig Breslow closed out the game.

The D-backs were able to get runners on base, but were unsuccessful in getting them to pass the plate. Through the first two innings alone, they left four men on with just one out in each inning.

Jason Kubel was the sole player to reach home after hitting a solo bomb off of Tim Hudson in the third inning. After that, Hudson was amazing, striking out 7 batters and retiring 13 in a row at one time in his eight innings pitched.

The Braves, on the other hand, were able to get men on base and then score them after big nights from Michael Bourn, Freddie Freeman and Chipper Jones. Everyone in the Braves' lineup recorded at least one hit, sans their second baseman, Dan Uggla.

The good news for the Diamondbacks is that they will get shortstop Stephen Drew back on Wednesday, whom manager Kirk Gibson has indicated will start. Also, rookie phenom Trevor Bauer has will be the starting pitcher for the D-backs on Thursday night.

If Daniel Hudson ends up having to go to the DL, the Diamondbacks have plenty of options to take his place including Josh Collmenter, Patrick Corbin and possibly even Tyler Skaggs. Coincidentally, Corbin was scratched from his minor league start after news of Hudson's injury traveled to Reno.

Diamondbacks Vs. Braves: Daniel Hudson Leaves Game in 2nd

Diamondbacks starting pitcher Daniel Hudson has left tonight's game against the Braves with an apparent injury. No details of the severity have yet been released. Hudson left the game down 4-0, after 1.2 innings and 53 pitches; Atlanta had runners at the corners when Hudson motioned to the dugout that he would need to exit the game. He was replaced by Josh Collmenter, who surrendered a run to Brian McCann to make it 5-0.

Daniel Hudson (3-1, 6.60), who had just come off the DL a few weeks ago after a month-long stint there due to a shoulder impingement, has posted an 11.37 ERA over his last three starts. The Diamondbacks recently called up Trevor Bauer to replace an injured Joe Saunders, and now may have to rely on even more prospects, depending on the severity of the injury and whether or not Hudson may now miss more time.
