Stephen Drew Getting Closer To Return, But Still No Timetable

Rehabbing Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew played his third straight game for the Triple-A Reno Aces on Saturday, the first time he has done so since he began his rehab assignment.

According to beat writer Nick Piecoro, manager Kirk Gibson sounds like Drew is almost there. "I'm optimistic that he's getting closer," Gibson said.

"I don't think it was easy for him," Gibson said of Drew playing three consecutive games. "I really don't. I think it was tough and he pushed through it. That's my sense."

Drew is hitting .292 in his rehab stint, slugging .542 and has a .346 on-base percentage. He has a double, a triple and a homer.

Reports are that he is fielding his position very well, with "tough plays he made look fairly routine, ranging far, planting and throwing."

There is no timetable yet for his return, but we get the sense that he will definitely be back in the D-backs lineup by the time baseball resumes after the All-Star break.

Diamondbacks Shut Out Again, Lose 2-0 Behind Garrett Richards' Gem

In the final game of their three-game interleague series, the Arizona Diamondbacks struggled again on offense and they failed to score for the second game in a row. Garrett Richards shut them down for eight innings and D-backs starter Ian Kennedy allowed only two runs in eight innings, and Arizona lost the game 2-0 and the series.

On offense, the only time that Arizona threatened was in the eighth inning. Willie Bloomquist and Jason Kubel singled and, with two out, Justin Upton had a chance to do a little damage. He popped out to Albert Pujols to end the inning.

Kubel also had a single in the first inning and Upton singled in the third.

Meanwhile, Ian Kennedy pitched very well, but had his efforts wasted. He allowed a fourth inning leadoff homer to Albert Pujols, his 10th of the year, and a run in the seventh.

Kennedy allowed six hits, struck out six and did not walk anyone.

Richards allowed only four hits and walked four in eight innings. He left in the ninth after a leadoff walk to Miguel Montero, but Ernesto Frieri retired Paul Goldschmidt, Chris Young and Aaron Hill to end the game and pick up his seventh save.

Richards improves to 2-0 and Kennedy falls to 5-7. Arizona returns home to play six games, three against the Seattle Mariners and the Chicago Cubs.

Diamondbacks Fall To Angels 2-0 Behind Strong Start From Ervin Santana

Ervin Santana powered the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday night in the second game of a three game interleague series. Santana threw a one-hit shutout, striking out five and only walking one batter.

The Diamondbacks did not have a base-runner until the seventh inning, when Justin Upton singled to break up Santana's perfect game. Arizona only had two base runners total on Saturday night, the other came in the ninth inning when Miguel Montero drew a pitch-hit walk.

The gem pitched by Santana (4-7) overshadowed a strong performance by Joe Saunders. The left-hander gave up two earned runs over six inning in a losing effort. Saunders (4-5) gave up eight hits and walked four batters on the night.

After being shutout on Friday night, the Angels got on the board early when Mark Trumbo blasted a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Saunders was one pitch away from getting out of the inning, but Trumbo hammered a three-two breaking ball off Saunders over the left field fence.

The Angels never looked back behind the strong performance of Santana. Santana came into tonight's game with an ERA of 5.74 and allowed seven earned runs in his last start against Colorado.

The rubber game of the series is scheduled for tomorrow at 12:35 PM. Arizona will send Ian Kennedy (5-6, 4.32) to the mound against Garrett Richards (1-0, 1.38) of Los Angeles.
