6-Run Outburst In 8th Propels Padres Past Miley, D-backs, 7-1

In the start of a three-game set against the San Diego Padres, Wade Miley and Clayton Richard locked up for a pitching duel until things got out of hand in the eighth inning and the Padres beat Miley and the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-1 on a six-run eighth inning.

Arizona and San Diego both scored in the third inning and that was it until the eighth inning. In the top of the inning, with two men on and two out, Miguel Montero singled up the middle to drive in Aaron Hill. In the bottom of the inning, Alexi Amarista tripled with one out on a ball that Gerardo Parra misplayed a bit and was unable to catch on a dive. Pitcher Clayton Richards then got the RBI on a bouncer to second base.

Richard set down 11 Diamondbacks batters in a row until he gave up hits to Wade Miley and Willie Bloomquist, when he was lifted in favor of Luke Gregorson, who retired the final batter of the inning.

In the top of the eighth, things got a little interesting. Emotions ran high after Chris Young walked with two outs. Ball four was a changeup that almost hit Young. As he got to first, words were exchanged, the dugouts emptied and nothing else. But Young, clearly upset about the incident, tried to steal second and was thrown out, and San Diego felt a little momentum.

In the bottom of the inning, Miley retired the first hitter and then Alexi Amarista reached on a bunt single. Pinch hitter Jesus Guzman then homered to give San Diego a 3-1 lead, but that only opened the floodgates. They would score four more times, chasing both Miley and David Hernandez, who did not retire any of the four hitters he faced.

That was enough as Arizona was clearly beaten and could not muster anything in the ninth.

Miley was charged with four runs in seven and one-third innings and took the loss, falling to 6-2 on the season. Andrew Cashner picked up the win.

The two will play Saturday afternoon at 4:15 Arizona time.
