With Sunday's resounding win over the San Diego Padres, the Arizona Diamondbacks are now 6-4 over their last ten games. It's not the kind of blistering pace the team needs to turn around their heretofore disappointing season, but maybe it's a start. Or maybe they just ran into a team even worse than they are.
Regardless of the long-term implications, it was a solid all-around game for the D-backs.
Trevor Cahill took a shutout into the ninth inning and finished his second-career complete game shutout. Cahill recorded a respectable line with five strike outs, three walks and six hits. Four induced double play balls by the sinker baller helped Cahill preserve the shutout. He threw just 109 pitches and faced just 31 batters in the win.
Paul Goldschmidt hit his sixth homer of the season and the second of the series to continue his hot-hitting ways. He extended an 11-game hitting streak with a solo blast in the second inning. He's now 18-43 (.419) over the past 12 games.
Miguel Montero hit a three-run blast in the sixth inning and Gerardo Parra hit a two-run shot in the seventh to complete the D-backs scoring.
This was a very solid game for the D-backs who now are just eight-games behind the L.A. Dodgers in the N.L. West. They head home for a series against the Colorado Rockies and Oakland A's.

The Arizona Diamondbacks up and down season rolled along Saturday with a trip back to the top of the roller coaster. One day after blowing another game late, Daniel Hudson took the mound and put the team on his back to earn the 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres.
Hudson, in just his second start since returning from the DL, went eight full innings with just five hits, two runs and one walk allowed.
The offense wasn't great but it was good enough to plate four runs and give Hudson his second win of the season.
Paul Goldschmidt hit his fifth home run of the season to get the D-backs a run in the fifth. Gerardo Parra scored the go-ahead run in the seventh when he was balked home from third. Parra's RBI walk in the eighth add an insurance run.
It's all good. All except for the D-backs repeated failure to capitalize on good scoring situations this season. Instead of turning a bases loaded, no out situation into a big fourth inning, the Snakes were able to get just one run in. Aaron Hill popped up to short. Dan Hudson plated the run with a sac-fly and then Parra struck out.
Notes:
-- Justin Upton was just 3-20 in his last five games which may or probably is the reason he was given the day off. Considering the D-backs just had a day off on Thursday, the slump seems like a likely reason. We keep waiting for J-Up to get his ship in order and get back to hitting like an MVP candidate. So far...days off.
-- Hudson hit for himself with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh and then Gibby let him continue in the eighth after he walked the lead-off man. The result was a ground out, a fly out and a strike out to end the inning.
-- Sunday's series finale features Trevor Cahill vs Eric Stults. The game won't be televised.
-- J.J. Putz got the save (his 12th), but made things a little too interesting for himself, allowing the go-ahead runner to come to the plate before getting it done.

In the start of a three-game set against the San Diego Padres, Wade Miley and Clayton Richard locked up for a pitching duel until things got out of hand in the eighth inning and the Padres beat Miley and the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-1 on a six-run eighth inning.
Arizona and San Diego both scored in the third inning and that was it until the eighth inning. In the top of the inning, with two men on and two out, Miguel Montero singled up the middle to drive in Aaron Hill. In the bottom of the inning, Alexi Amarista tripled with one out on a ball that Gerardo Parra misplayed a bit and was unable to catch on a dive. Pitcher Clayton Richards then got the RBI on a bouncer to second base.
Richard set down 11 Diamondbacks batters in a row until he gave up hits to Wade Miley and Willie Bloomquist, when he was lifted in favor of Luke Gregorson, who retired the final batter of the inning.
In the top of the eighth, things got a little interesting. Emotions ran high after Chris Young walked with two outs. Ball four was a changeup that almost hit Young. As he got to first, words were exchanged, the dugouts emptied and nothing else. But Young, clearly upset about the incident, tried to steal second and was thrown out, and San Diego felt a little momentum.
In the bottom of the inning, Miley retired the first hitter and then Alexi Amarista reached on a bunt single. Pinch hitter Jesus Guzman then homered to give San Diego a 3-1 lead, but that only opened the floodgates. They would score four more times, chasing both Miley and David Hernandez, who did not retire any of the four hitters he faced.
That was enough as Arizona was clearly beaten and could not muster anything in the ninth.
Miley was charged with four runs in seven and one-third innings and took the loss, falling to 6-2 on the season. Andrew Cashner picked up the win.
The two will play Saturday afternoon at 4:15 Arizona time.

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Jason Kubel has returned from paternity leave and will be on the roster for Friday night's game with the San Diego Padres. The club has optioned A.J. Pollock to Triple-A Reno to make room for Kubel. He had been away from the team since Wednesday, May 30.
Kubel arrived at the hospital on Wednesday and within 10 minutes, his wife, Blake, had their first daughter, Heidi Evelyn, at 11:56 a.m. Heidi was 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 19 ¾". Jason & Blake also have a son, Owen.
Pollock will look to continue his strong season in Reno, and a call back to the Majors is certainly possible in the coming weeks.
Even with the return of Kubel to the 25-man roster, he was not listed as a starter on Kirk Gibson's lineup. Here is that lineup for Friday's game with the Padres.

Arizona Diamondbacks' shortstop Stephen Drew continues his long, arduous journey back to the major leagues following a gruesome ankle injury last season with a couple of extended outings this weekend. According to Steve Gilbert, Drew is expected to play back-to-back games after going seven on Friday, and is hoping to go all nine innings on Saturday. This would mark the first time playing two days in a row since suffering the injury on July 20th.
#Dbacks Stephen Drew played seven innings in an extended ST game today. Scheduled to play again tomorrow at SRF at 10 a.m.
— Steve Gilbert (@SteveGilbertMLB) June 1, 2012
If all goes well, Drew is hoping to then head to Reno for a rehab stint that would put him on the right track to rejoining the Diamondbacks. He was injured while sliding into home last year and in the collision with the catcher, his ankle was severely twisted.
