Joe Saunders To DL, But No Trevor Bauer...Yet

On Saturday, the Arizona Diamondbacks made a roster move, just a day after Joe Saunders missed his start with shoulder stiffness. The team placed him on the 15-day disabled list and called up right-handed reliever Jonathan Albaladejo, who has had a short stint this season with the major league club already.

Saunders began warming up on Friday for his start against the Chicago Cubs, but was unable to get loose and Josh Collmenter made the start in his place.

He was throwing the ball well on Saturday and was going to see team doctors, but the team decided to make a move. He will have to miss at least one more start.

While there are trade rumors swirling surrounding Saunders, it appears that nothing is imminent.

It was also speculated that moving Saunders would signal the call up of Trevor Bauer. That is not happening now. However, the calling up of Albaladejo does not eliminate that possibility.

With Josh Collmenter unavailable out of the bullpen for a few days after pitching four innings on Friday, the D-backs needed someone to be able to fill a long relief role. With Saunders spot not coming up for at least another five days (with an off day on Monday, the team does not technically even need a fifth starter this time around), it is completely possible that Albalabejo gets sent back down and Bauer gets brought up to make his major league debut.

Likewise, Collmenter could get the start and Albaladejo stays in the pen.

Since manager Kirk Gibson has really grown to like Collmenter out of the pen, signs point to either skipping Saunders' turn this time around or bringing someone up.

However, Gibson said in his pregame press conference Saturday that "it is to be determined." Bauer is an option, so is Collmenter and don't forget Patrick Corbin, who already has started in the majors for Arizona. Corbin is a bit more polished than Bauer in all facets of pitching, while Bauer has been dominating, but still needs to learn the finer points of the game in pitch efficiency and managing a game.

Whatever the decision is, it will come in the next few days.

Arizona Diamondbacks Roster Moves: AJ Pollock Called Up, Lyle Overbay On Paternity Leave

For the second time in as many weeks, an Arizona Diamondbacks player is having a baby...well, his wife is. Arizona placed first baseman Lyle Overbay on paternity leave so he could be with his wife for the birth of their fourth child on Wednesday. He will miss at least Wednesday's game, and can be absent from the roster no more than three days.

Jason Kubel missed a game last week for the birth of his second child.

To replace Overbay for now, and just as he did last week, outfielder A.J. Pollock was recalled from Triple-A Reno. He is starting Wednesday night against the Colorado Rockies.

With Kirk Gibson sitting Justin Upton and the Rockies starting a left-hander in Josh Outman, the D-backs wanted a right-handed hitting outfielder in the lineup.

Pollock did not play last week when he was up.

Overbay will be back at the latest on Saturday.

Jason Kubel To Miss A Game Or Two On Paternity Leave, D-Backs Recall AJ Pollock

Even baseball players have to deal with family things like their wives having babies. The Arizona Diamondbacks made a roster move to accommodate a family matter of this sort. Outfielder Jason Kubel was placed on paternity leave so he could return home to be with his wife, who delivered the couple's second child on Wednesday.

Kubel missed the game on Wednesday against the Giants, which the team won 4-1. He can be out a maximum of three days, which means the most he can be off the active roster is missing the series opener his team has against the San Diego Padres on Friday.

Arizona does not play on Thursday.

To temporarily replace Kubel on the roster, the team recalled speedy outfielder A.J. Pollock from Triple-A Reno. It will be his second stint with the major league club. He hit .229 with a homer and two doubles during the month he was with the big league team when Chris Young was on the disabled list.

D-backs Activate Daniel Hudson From DL, Konrad Schmidt Sent To Triple-A

The Arizona Diamondbacks received a big boost on Sunday afternoon as Daniel Hudson was activated from the disabled list. While he struggled a bit against the Brewers in his first start in nearly a month, Hudson has the ability to be a difference maker in the rotation. It is now just a matter of getting his strength and stamina back to the levels they were at before the shoulder injury.

Konrad Schmidt was sent down to Triple-A to open up a spot on the 25-man roster.

Here is the official release from the club.

"PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have reinstated right-handed pitcher Daniel Hudson from the 15-day disabled list and optioned catcher Konrad Schmidt to Triple-A Reno, according to D-backs' Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Hudson, 25, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder impingement on April 21 (retro to April 19). He made 1 rehab start for the Aces on May 21 vs. New Orleans, allowing 2 earned runs in 5.0 innings.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA (12 ER in 18.0 IP) in 3 starts with the D-backs this season.

Schmidt, 27, went 0-for-4 with his first career RBI last night vs. Brewers. He was hitting .274 (32-for-117) with 8 doubles, 3 homers and 14 RBI in 31 games for the Aces in 2012 before his recall on May 22."

The D-backs sit at 22-26 now on the season, but this is a team capable of really turning their season around now that they're getting healthy. The NL West is among the worst divisions in baseball and there will be plenty of opportunities to move up in the standings. This was a team that really made their move in July and August of 2011; we're not even to June yet.

Arizona Diamondbacks Option Patrick Corbin, Recall Konrad Schmidt, Starting Lineups for D-backs Vs. Dodgers

During the game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night, catcher Miguel Montero tweaked his groin and left the game. Because of the injury and because pitcher Daniel Hudson will be back with the team soon, the team made a pair of roster moves.

They recalled catcher Konrad Schmidt from Triple-A Reno and optioned pitcher Patrick Corbin to Reno.

Montero is not expected to miss much time, but only having one catcher available is never a good idea. Manager Kirk Gibson said that, while Montero will not play at least until Friday when the Milwaukee Brewers come to town, he came in to the ballpark today not feeling too bad. Even still, playing him is not an option right now, because of teh nature of being a catcher. "He has to block balls," said Gibson.

Corbin's departure was in preparation for the return of Daniel Hudson, who said on Tuesday that he will not need another rehab start. "He had better command" of the 71 pitches he threw in his start on Monday than his previous start, said Gibson. The target is to have him return and make a start on Sunday against the Brewers.

Corbin impressed Gibson in his time with the big league club. Gibson said, "he's very good at all aspects of the game. He's got a good future ahead.

He has some things to work on down in the minors, and will do so in Reno instead of Mobile, where he was called up from. Gibson expects him to be used again and make an impact.

Here are the starting lineups for Tuesday's game against the Dodgers:

Dodgers:

  1. Tony Gwynn, Jr., CF
  2. Elian Herrera, 2B
  3. Bobby Abreu, LF
  4. Andre Ethier, RF
  5. Adam Kennedy, 3B
  6. James Loney, 1B
  7. A.J. Ellis, C
  8. Dee Gordon, SS
  9. Aaron Harang, P
Diamondbacks:

First pitch will be at 6:40 PM. The game will be televised on FS Arizona.

D-Backs Recall Josh Bell, Designate Cody Ransom For Assignment

Bell was playing at Triple-A Reno, hitting .381 (37-for-97) with 9 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs and 30 RBI in 26 games with the Aces. He was acquired from the Orioles on April 21 for a player to be named later (Mike Belfiore sent to Baltimore on May 12).

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound switch hitter has played in 79 Major League games with the Baltimore Orioles from 2010-11, going only 44-for-220 (.200) with 3 home runs with 18 RBI. Bell was originally selected by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2005 draft. The struggles of Ryan Roberts at the plate might have necessitated this move.

Bell will wear the jersey No. 15.

The 36 year old Ransom had played fairly well, hitting .269 (14-for-52) with 4 homers and 13 RBIs in 17 games with the D-backs this season. He began the season with Reno before his contract was selected on April 18. There are two more openings on the 40 man roster.

Trevor Bauer Reportedly Promoted To AAA Reno

Right handed starter Trevor Bauer is considered to be the crown jewel of the Arizona Diamondbacks minor league system. He has done nothing but pitch fabulously since he started the season in AA Mobile. He is 7-1 with an ERA of 1.68, striking out 60 batters in 48 and one-third innings. Hitters are batting only .192 against him. In his eight starts, he has allowed one run or less in six of them.

With the success he has had, Kyndra de St. Aubin from Arizona Sports 620 is reporting that the Diamondbacks organization has promoted him to the AAA minor league team, the Reno Aces.

He is scheduled to make his Reno debut on Friday.

With the rapid promotion, it would appear that he could possibly see time in the major leagues before the end of the season, especially if the Diamondbacks' fortunes do not improve.

How he does in AAA will be interesting to watch. The PCL is known for being a pitcher's nightmare, especially in the dry Reno air. If he is able to maintain similar stats in AAA, he will have shown he is ready for big leagues.

Arizona Diamondbacks Roster Moves: Joe Paterson, Jonathan Albaladejo Out; Mike Zagurski, Joe Martinez In

The Arizona Diamondbacks, winners of two straight games despite a slew of key injuries to the team, has decided to make some rosters moves. After two outings of facing five batters and not retiring a single one, left-handed reliever Joe Paterson was optioned to AAA Reno and right-hander Jonathan Albaladejo, who appeared once since being called up, was designated for assignment.

To replace them on the roster, lefty Mike Zagurski and right-hander Joe Martinez were called up from Reno.

Zagurski almost made the team out of spring training, but was caught in a numbers game. He pitched very well and has continued to do so in AAA, holding left-handed batters to a .100 average and allowing only two runs in nine innings. He had an eight-appearance scoreless streak.

Zagurski has had some major league experience, but not much.

Martinez was rumored to be a candidate to start for the injured Daniel Hudson. In three starts for Reno, he was 0-1 with a 4.42 ERA.

Martinez has started six games in the big leagues and pitched 12 times in relief.

Zagurski will get a shot to fill the left-handed specialist role that Paterson filled. Martinez' role is uncertain right now. Manager Kirk Gibson has not said whether Wade Miley will make another start, but he cannot pitch in the bullpen for the next few days because he started. For now, it looks like Martinez will fill the long-relief role and he may be called upon to start in a pinch if the team decides that it is best served with Miley coming out of the bullpen.
