D-backs Battle Elements In Colorado, Defeat Rockies 5-2 Behind Trevor Cahill

Following a demoralizing loss on Saturday night in the ninth inning, the Arizona Diamondbacks needed to get back on track against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday afternoon. Despite cold, windy, rainy conditions at Coors Field -- it literally looked like a rainy blizzard during the seventh inning -- the D-backs came away with a 5-2 victory behind a stellar pitching effort from Trevor Cahill.

The young lefty worked 7.1 impressive innings, allowing just one run on four hits and two walks. He struck out six Rockies hitters on the afternoon. The Diamondbacks bullpen kept things interesting late with their inability to get out of a jam in the eighth inning, but Bryan Shaw worked out of a bases loaded situation in the eighth before completing a perfect ninth inning.

Chris Young continued to hit everything in sight, belting a two-run homer in the first inning to give Arizona an early lead. Young came up big once again in the third with an RBI-single to left that scored Gerardo Parra. With the bases loaded, Aaron Hill delivered a two-out, two-run single to left to extend the lead to 5-0.

The D-backs will return home to warm Arizona on Monday to kick off a three-game tries with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Joe Saunders will take the mound in the first game, and he will be opposed by Erik Bedard. First pitch is set for 6:40 from Chase Field.

D-backs vs. Rockies: Probable Pitchers, Game Time, TV Coverage And More

The Arizona Diamondbacks took a tough loss on Friday night in their series-opener with the Colorado Rockies, falling by a score of 7-6. Fortunately for the D-backs, they'll get yet another chance to defeat their NL West foes on Saturday night. They'll hand the ball to pitcher Josh Collmenter. The righty lasted just three innings in his last start against the Giants.

As for the Rockies, they will have Jhoulys Chacin on the mound to start the game. The young pitcher had a fine debut season in 2011 and is capable of putting up big strikeout numbers.

The game is set to begin at 5:10 p.m. locally in Arizona. The game will not be telecast on FOX Sports Arizona due to a Suns game, but those with FS Arizona-Plus can find it broadcast live on Saturday evening. It will also be telecast on MLB Network, although you'll have to work around blackout restrictions to see if you qualify for the game in your neck of the woods. KTAR 92.3 FM will have your radio coverage tonight.

Diamondbacks Fall Short, Rockies Win 7-6

Coors Field in Denver, Colorado has a way of making starting pitchers look bad. The cool, thin air and the big outfield puts a lot of balls in play that would otherwise not be in play. Both Arizona Diamondbacks starter Daniel Hudson and Rockies starter Juan Nicasio felt the sting and were back in the club house early.

The D-backs struck first, building a 6-2 lead through the top of the third inning that sent Nicasio to the showers with an unimpressive line of 2.2 innings with five hits, five walks and six earned runs.

The Rockies came right back, however, and hung some runs on Hudson and sent him to the bench with six runs, three walks, 10 hits and two homeruns allowed over 3.2 innings.

So, with the score tied at sixes, the respective bullpens took over the game and both did well. It wasn't until the eighth inning when Todd Helton drove in Carlos Gonzalez off D-backs reliever Bryan Shaw that the tie was broken. CarGo got on with a hit and then advanced to third when a throw over from the pitcher escaped Paul Goldschimidt. It was only Goldy's first error as a major league player.

Hudson will justifiably take the loss in this one. The offense did its part and the pen allowed just one run, but Huddy needed to be better and he knows it.

All seven games of the young season have been decided by two runs or less.

The D-backs have two more chances against the Rockies this weekend with Josh Collmenter on Saturday and Trevor Cahill going on Sunday.

Hernandez, D-backs Falter In Late Innings, Lose 2-1 At San Diego

Pitcher David Hernandez is the Arizona Diamondbacks' money man in the eighth inning, the guy who sets the table for closer J.J Putz and sets the stage for a Snakes' win. Wednesday afternoon, however, Hernandez faltered, and the San Diego Padres rallied in the bottom of the eighth for two runs to take the lead and ultimately win the game, 2-1.

Arizona (4-1) lost for the first time this season, snapping a record four-game win streak to open 2012. After three one-run games and an extra-innings affair Tuesday, good fortune caught up to the D-backs. Chris Denorfia, one of many Padres who'd struggled at the plate thus far this season, hit a two-run home run with Cameron Maybin on base after a walk, and Huston Street earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning as the previously NL West bottom-dwelling Padres improved to 2-4.

Street retired Justin Upton on a lazy pop fly to former D-back Orlando Hudson to end the game, Upton slamming his bat against the dirt after the swing.

Denorfia was in the lineup because the Padres were facing a left-handed starter in Joe Saunders, making his season debut. Saunders was sharp for seven innings, shutting out the Padres on four hits. The plan was working to perfection -- a good start then manager Kirk Gibson turning it over to his dual bullpen aces, Hernandez and eventually Putz.

Except Hernandez threw a fastball up and down the middle, and Denorfia crushed it over the wall in dead center field at spacious Petco Park, where home runs normally go to die.

Until the fateful eighth, Arizona held on to a 1-0 lead after scoring one run off Padres starter Cory Luebke in the first inning. Luebke, bombed by the Dodgers in his first start of the season, threw more than 40 pitches in the first inning alone, and a two-out walk to Jason Kubel allowed Willie Bloomquist to trot home. The D-backs left the bases loaded in that inning.

Luebke righted himself and lasted 5 1/3 innings, then the Padres' bullpen did its job. Ernesto "Big Ern" Frieri earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Arizona welcomed back Upton to the lineup after he didn't start Tuesday due to a sore left thumb. Upton was 0-for-3 with two walks.

Arizona Diamondbacks Defeat Padres 4-2 In Extra Innings

The Arizona Diamondbacks needed eleven innings to do it, but the club pulled out a 4-2 road victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night behind the heroics of Chris Young. With the win, Arizona is 4-0 on the season, their best start in franchise history. The Padres are now 1-4 in 2012.

Trevor Cahill made his first start with the D-backs and was effectively wild, working through six innings of one-run ball. He allowed just two hits on the night and struck out five, but six walks kept him on a tightrope for most of the night. Brad Ziegler struggled in his appearance, but the rest of the relievers out of the bullpen all pitched very well to keep Arizona in the game.

Edison Volquez pitched well for the Padres, going seven innings while striking out eight. He allowed just two early runs on five hits and three walks.

Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs in the first inning with a double. The Padres scratched across one run in the third and seventh innings.

With the game tied in the 11th, Gerardo Parra was hit by a pitch from Craig Breslow to start the inning. Young came up to the plate and belted a ball to left field, just clearing the deep left field wall at Petco Park. The D-backs then handed a 4-2 lead to closer J.J. Putz, and after a leadoff single from Yonder Alonso, Putz set down the next three batters in order.

The two clubs will meet again on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3:35 p.m.
