Ian Kennedy didn't know what hit him, lasting only three innings after allowing nine earned runs in a poor start. The D-backs' offense could not compensate and the Snakes lost the series against St. Louis.

"Ace" Ian Kennedy was rocked hard over the first three innings on Wednesday evening, allowing nine earned runs before being yanked. No amount of grit in all of Major League Baseball would have saved the Arizona Diamondbacks in game three of their series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Snakes have now lost two of their first three complete series.
The apex of Kennedy's struggles was a Lance Berkman grand slam in the second inning that made it 8-0, Cardinals. Kennedy's initial relief wasn't any better, as Aaron Heilman -- once in consideration for a spot in the starting rotation -- allowed St. Louis' other six runs (all earned) over the fourth and fifth innings, including a three-run homer run from Skip Schumaker.
The Diamondbacks, running high on the gritometer from manager Kirk Gibson's Tuesday night ejection, couldn't do much with the hole their pitching put them in, though they did manage five runs that included a two-run homer from Russell Branyan. Chris Young, Miguel Montera, and Melvin Mora notched RBIs, as well.
On the positive side, Juan Gutierrez came out of the bullpen, pitched for two innings, and didn't give up a boatload of runs, breaking the trend of his past two games. As a whole, the bullpen (outside of Heilman) did alright, denying any runs over the final four innings.
The Diamondbacks will face the defending champion San Francisco Giants at home, starting on Friday, and will hope that their starting pitching will give more than it had taken away against St. Louis.
The Arizona Diamondbacks made a pair of moves today involving the Triple A Reno Aces, bringing up right-handed pitcher Esmerling Vasquez and sending down right-handed pitcher Kam Mickolio.
Mickolio, a middle reliever with the Diamondbacks that acquired in the Mark Reynolds’ trade, has had two pretty good outings and two pretty bad outings with Arizona so far this season. On April 2 and April 10, the 26-year-old combined to pitch 3.0 innings while giving up just two hits and striking out three batter. In Mickolio’s other two outings — most recently last night against the St. Louis Cardinals — he’s pitched 2.0 innings and given up five runs on six hits.
Vasquez is no stranger to the Diamondbacks as the 27-year-old has been optioned and recalled numerous times. In his only appearance in Reno this season, he pitched one scoreless inning while striking out one in an April 11 game at Colorado Springs. In his D-Backs career, Vasquez has a 4.81 ERA over the course of 110 games.

The Diamondbacks tied their series with the St. Louis Cardinals 1-1 after Tuesday's 13-8 victory at home, and they will look to build on that success in the third and game of this series.
Arizona's starting pitcher for tonight will be Ian Kennedy, who is 1-0 on the season with a 2.57 ERA. Kennedy will look to build off of a solid performance against the Cincinnati Reds last Saturday. Kennedy gave up only one run and six hits over eight innings.
The Cardinals will start Jake Westbrook, who is 0-1 with a 9.90 ERA after Saturday's 5-4 loss in 12 innings to San Francisco Giants.
Today's game is schedule to start at 6:40 p.m. local time and will be broadcast on Fox Sports Arizona (TV) and KTAR 620 (Radio).

These are games that the Arizona Diamondbacks should lose, right?
With St. Louis Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter throwing tonight, Arizona countered with Armando Galarraga. What happened tonight was beyond anyone's expectation.
The Diamondbacks tagged Carpenter for eight earned runs over four innings en route to a 13-8 blowout win at Chase Field on Tuesday night. Justin Upton, Chris Young and Juan Miranda all hit home runs on the evening, allowing the Diamondbacks to even their record at 5-5.
Galarraga gave up five earned runs in five innings, getting his second Arizona victory on the young season. Kam Mickolio gave up three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. After that, the Diamondbacks bullpen shut it down.
Joe Paterson, David Hernandez and J.J. Putz combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball to allow the home team to come out victorious.
The Diamondbacks offense is clicking on all cylinders right now; seven of the eight position players in the starting lineup had an average over .300 by the end of the night.
With the win, Arizona moved within 2.5 games back of Colorado, who holds the division lead with a 7-2 record.
The Arizona Diamondbacks got hit hard Monday night in the series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals. Lance Berkman proved he's not yet done (two home runs) and pitcher Kyle McClellan went six innings and had two RBI (ugh). The gritty D-backs get another chance to show just how resilient they are when they get back out on the field Tuesday night for the second game of the series.
The most disturbing outcome of the game was another bad showing from Juan Gutierrez who not has amassed an ERA of 14.73 in five games (3.2 IP). The D-backs need this guy to get his act together and provide that seventh and eighth inning bridge to the closer.
Armando Galarraga (1-0, 5.14) will take the ball for Arizona while St. Louis has their ace Chris Carpenter on the hill (0-1, 2.08). Carpenter is a perfect 4-0 against the Diamondbacks with a 2.54 ERA in 11 games (10 starts). This will be Galarraga has only face the Cardinals once before, he received a no decision. St. Louis was 5-4 against the Arizona last season.
Today's game is schedule to start at 6:40 p.m. local time and will be broadcast on Fox Sports Arizona (TV) and KTAR 620 (Radio).

Today's Farm Report brought to you by the good people who put corn syrup in everything we eat:
Diamondbacks Farm Round-Up: April 11th - AZ Snake Pit
Jarrod Parker made his long-awaited minor-league debut for Mobile this afternoon, as his rehab from Tommy John surgery continues. If you want a quick summary of the results, let's just say, "Work in progress," and move rapidly on, shall we?
St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle McClellan allowed only one run over six innings and drove in two runs and Lance Berkman homered twice to lead the Cardinals to a 8-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first of a three game series.
Arizona starter Barry Enright also pitched six innings and was really pretty effective outside the fourth inning, when he could not get the final out of the inning and allowed three runs, giving St. Louis a 4-0 that Arizona was not able to overcome.
Reliever Sam Demel took over in the seventh inning and gave up the first of the two homeruns to Berkman.
Arizona rallied in the bottom of the seventh but was only able to muster one run in the inning, and that was it offensively. But after bringing the deficit to three runs, Juan Gutierrez came in after Joe Patterson and allowed two homers and three runs.
The story of the game was timely offense. The D'backs were 1-9 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base. The Cardinals scored seven of their eight runs with two out.
Tuesday night the two teams face off again at 6:40 PM. Chris Carpenter will start for St. Louis and Arizona will counter with Armando Galarraga.
Game notes:
Willie Bloomquist with his one hit has hit safely in each of the eight games he has played.
Juan Gutierrez has now given up five earned runs in his last 1 1/3 innings, looking a lot like how he looked at the start of last season.
Coming to Monday's game, the current Diamondbacks roster was batting .333 against McClellan in 27 at-bats. That success did not continue.

The D-backs manager said he doesn’t worry about the size of the crowd at games, even though his team is off to a praiseworthy 4-4 start and the club plays with heart to the very end, it has shown so far.
Arizona drew 48,027 for the home opener, then down to 20,719 on rainy Saturday and 19,718 Sunday for the exciting 10-8 win over Cincinnati that included two comebacks.
“It’s our obligation to give them a reason to come out. There’s one person here or 50,000 people, we’re playing the Cardinals tonight, and we shouldn’t need any motivation other than the fact that we’re in the big leagues,” Gibson said. “We owe it to ourselves and baseball and our organization and the fans that do show up to give it everything we have and don’t give in to anything.”
The Diamondback go to war tonight with Barry Enright on the mound. Melvin Mora get the start at third while Willie Bloomquist goes in left. It's impossible to keep that guy in the bench with the way he's playing right now.
Here's the full lineup for the opening game of the series with the Cardinals:
RHP Barry Enright (0-0, 6.00) vs. RHP Kyle McClellan (0-0, 3.00)
Lineup: Bloomquist LF, Johnson 2B, Upton RF, Drew SS, Young CF, Montero C, Mora 3B, Miranda 1B, Enright RHP
The Arizona Diamondbacks (4-4) will play host to the St. Louis Cardinals (3-6) and their all-world slugging first baseman, Albert Pujols. Phat Albert may very well be playing his last season in Cardinals red unless the team agrees to cough up the 10-year, $300 million he's asking for on his next deal. For the sake of the entire National League, let's hope it's the Yankees or Red Sox that cough up the money to buy this guy so he can stop terrorizing NL pitching.
Pujols, for whatever reason, hasn't hit the ball great at Chase Field in his career. According to CBS Sports, "in six games in Arizona last season, Pujols hit .174 with a homer and four RBIs. He is hitting .213 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 12 games at Chase Field since 2008, his lowest batting average for any stadium he has appeared in at least 10 games."
So maybe the park can contain him, at least until the Home Run Derby this July. That specific task will fall on projected starting pitchers Barry Enright (Monday), Armando Galarraga (Tuesday) and Ian Kennedy (Wendesday). Good luck, boys.
The Cardinals are off to a slow start this season, and unlike the D-backs may be lacking in "Tru Grit". Or, it could just be their bad luck with injuries. Kyle McClellan (0-0, 3.00 ERA) will take the bump for the Red Birds.

AZ Snake Pit - For Arizona Diamondbacks Fans
These huge losses might spell doom for the Cardinals in what should be a very competitive NL Central. If nothing else, these injuries point to a massive amount of bad karma toward a higher power.
