Monday will mark the first day that NFL teams can apply the franchise tag on players. Free agency will begin on March 13, so the Arizona Cardinals will need to decide whether they will use the franchise tag on one of their impending free agents by March 5.
Gregg Rosenthal at NBC Sports posted a rundown of which players are likely to get tagged by teams in short order. He considers Calais Campbell to be the No. 2 "No-Brainer" to be given the franchise tag of all NFL players. Here's what he has to say about the Cardinals defensive end:
Campbell picked up Ray Horton's 3-4 defense faster than his celebrated (and effective) teammate Darnell Dockett. Campbell is only 25-years-old and will be difficult to sign long term. His representation knows his value.
It seemed likely from the outset that Campbell is a player of immense value who is all too aware of that fact. The Cardinals will almost certainly apply the tag to keep Campbell where he is for the time being.
