Arizona Cardinals Injury Report, Week 16: Joey Porter May Play, LaRod Stephens-Howling Doubtful

On the eve of the Week 16 matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas night, there is some optimism about the availability of linebacker Joey Porter. The triceps injury he suffered against the Carolina Panthers was not as serious as initially believed. He was limited in practice on Friday and will be a gameday decision as to whether he will play or not. If he cannot, rookie O'Brien Schofield will start.

Running back and kick returner LaRod Stephens-Howling sat out Friday's practice with his hamstring injury and is doubtful for the game against Dallas.

Derek Anderson will dress for tomorrow's game, but Ken Whisenhunt has not decided whether he will be the backup or emergency quarterback. One would have to lean towards being the backup, as Richard Bartel has only been with the team for a couple of weeks.

Cardinals/Cowboys Sold Out, Pro Bowl Voting, Injury Update

On Wednesday it was announced that the Arizona Cardinals' game on Christmas Day versus the Dallas Cowboys was sold out. This makes a fourth consecutive sold out season for at University of Phoenix Stadium. It means that the game will be aired locally on television. It is being televised on NFL Network and also locally on UPN 45 (Cox Cable 9).

Fan balloting for the Pro Bowl ended on Monday. Five Arizona Cardinals were in the top five in voting in the NFC for their positions. Punter Ben Graham finished as the top vote getter for NFC punters. Larry Fitzgerald was number four among NFC receivers (behind DeSean Jackson, Roddy White and Calvin Johnson). Safety Adrian Wilson was number three at his position, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was fourth at his and guard Alan Faneca was fifth.

The fan voting is one third of the total calculations for the Pro Bowl. The players and coaches also vote. The NFL will announce the Pro Bowl teams next week. As written earlier here on SB Nation Arizona, there were other Cardinals that deserved fan votes, including Jay Feely, Kerry Rhodes, Paris Lenon and LaRod Stephens-Howling. Hopefully in a disappointing season, there can be some individual accolades for those that have performed at a high level.

On the injury front, Joey Porter's triceps injury is considered a strain and is listed as day-to-day. He did not practice today and neither did Stephens-Howling, due to his pulled hamstring. "Hyphen" might not be ready for the game against the Cowboys. Derek Anderson returned to practice but was limited. Clark Haggans (groin) and Calais Campbell (ankle) were also limited.

Porter has not been ruled out for Saturday. If he is unable to play, rookie O'Brien Schofield would start in his place. Schofield has played very well on special teams and has contributed much more than expected, considering he was recovering from a knee injury and was not expected to play much at all this year.

Arizona Cardinals Injury Report Week 16: Early Doucet to IR, Roster Changes

Following a hip injury suffered during the 19-12 loss to the Carolina Panthers, receiver Early Doucet's season officially is over. The Arizona Cardinals placed him on injured reserve. To replace his spot on the roster, Arizona promoted linebacker Curtis Gatewood from the practice squad. Linebacker Brandon Sharpe was signed to the practice squad by the Cardinals to replace Gatewood's spot there. There has still been no word on Joey Porter's triceps injury.

Doucet's season ends with a career best 26 receptions for 291 yards, but was mostly a disappointment because of time lost to injuries (he has only played in 26 games over three seasons), timely drops (five on the season) and a lack of impact following the departure of Anquan Boldin.

With Doucet out, Andre Roberts will move up to the number three receiver. This would mean that undrafted rookies Stephen Williams and Max Komar will have their opportunity to make an impact on offense. Williams will move up to number four and Komar will likely now be active for the game. With only two games left in the season, it is their last chance to make an impression on the field.
