The Arizona Diamondbacks wrapped up their series with the Colorado Rockies on Monday night, looking for the four game sweep and trying to keep their playoff hopes alive. It would have been the first sweep the Diamondbacks would record against Colorado since 2002, but the Rockies managed to hold them off for one game.
With Trevor Cahill on the mound, the Diamondbacks have had trouble in the first innings of games this season. Such was the case again on Monday night when Cahill took a ground ball and attempted to throw it to second base in an attempt to turn a double play. Unfortunately, he missed the throw to shortstop John McDonald by a mile, causing the ball to roll into centerfield and allowing Charlie Blackmon to advance to third. From there, Tyler Colvin hit a base hit, scoring Blackmon. The inning ended, ironically, on a terrific double play ball turned by McDonald.
With the score sitting at 1-0, Arizona left two men on base in the second inning, including Miguel Montero on third base. Luckily for the Diamondbacks, Jason Kubel changed all of that with one swing of his bat in the fourth. Tyler Chatwood had been pitching a gem of a game until Kubel's two-run bomb to right field, his 30th of the year. It was all set up after Chatwood walked Paul Goldschmidt with two outs in the inning.
As good as the top of the fourth inning was, the bottom was equally as bad for Arizona. In what seemed like a matter of seconds, Cahill managed to load the bases for the Rockies -- and they had no outs. A groundout from Andrew Brown forced a runner home, but got the runner out at second base. DJ LeMahieu's single to right field untied the score, giving the Rockies a 3-2 advantage. Cahill would then record yet another groundout to get out of the inning.
After getting out of another jam in the fifth, the Diamondbacks were in a need for an offensive spark. Down 3-2, they had only three hits in the game entering the eighth inning. The bullpen crew of Josh Outman, Guillermo Moscoso and Rafael Betancourt would keep Arizona from scoring again, as the Diamondbacks were only able to record two more hits for the rest of the game.
Andrew Brown capped it all off with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, making the score 4-2. Oddly enough, it had taken 368 at-bats against Brad Ziegler for a right-handed batter to hit a home run. It was his first homer allowed since June 30, 2010, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
With another loss in the books, the chances that the Diamondbacks make the postseason are decreasing by the day. A Cardinals victory tonight places the D-Backs 5.5 games out of a Wild Card position and a longshot to make the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

The Arizona Diamondbacks had another high scoring affair in the mile high air Sunday afternoon, scoring seven runs in the last two innings for a 10-7 win over the Colorado Rockies.
Second baseman Aaron Hill lead the charge going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs while backup catcher Will Nieves got a little revenge against his former team with four hits of his own. Ian Kennedy had a respectable start, scattering the damage for a respectable line through six innings pitched (nine hits, four earned runs and six strikeouts).
The game was relatively low-scoring by Coors Field standards through the first seven innings with the Rockies holding a 4-3 lead heading into the top of the eighth. But with only two innings left the play, Mike Jacobs would get the party started with a pinch-hit, RBI-single that scored John McDonald. Following a strikeout from Adam Eaton, Aaron Hill blew things open with three-run blast.
Arizona would do some more damage in the ninth when Jake Elmore scored two with a single. Shortly after, A.J. Pollock tacked on another when Nieves scored on his ground out.
The Rockies got three back in the ninth thanks in part to Tyler Colvin plating two with a double. But Kirk Gibson would pull Takashi Saito for J.J. Putz and the D-backs' closer didn't fool around, getting the last out on an easy ground ball.
The D-backs will remain in Colorado for one more game as they look to complete the four-game sweep. Trevor Cahill (12-11, 3.89 ERA) will be looking to finish the deal against Tyler Chatwood (4-5, 5.73 ERA).

With the NL West title now out of their reach, the Arizona Diamondbacks are still fighting for a wild card spot in the National League, and a win against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday would certainly help their chances.
Arizona is just 4.5 games back of the final wild card spot in the NL, though will need some help from the Dodgers, Brewers and Phillies, all of whom are ahead of them in the standings.
The D-backs will send Ian Kennedy (14-11, 4.08 ERA) to the mound, who is 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA in his last four outings. He's been particularly good over his last two starts, allowing no runs on four hits in 7.1 innings to beat the Dodgers 1-0 on Sept. 11 followed up with a one-run performance over eight innings of Tuesday's 3-2 win against the Padres.
Colorado will counter with Jeff Francis (5-6, 5.58), who's taken the loss in his last two outings. He gave up two runs in five innings of work en route to a 6-3 loss to the Giants on Tuesday. He has a 6.23 ERA over his last four starts.
First pitch is set for 12:10 pm. PT with coverage on Forx Sports Arizona and KTAR 620 AM.

The Arizona Diamondbacks used a five-run 6th inning to defeat the Colorado Rockies 8-7 Saturday night.
Arizona jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the 1st, as Aaron Hill, Paul Goldschmidt and Jason Kubel each collected an RBI. Not to be outdone, Colorado used three extra-base hits in the 2nd inning to take a 4-3 lead.
The Rockies tacked on one more run before the Diamondbacks put together their five-run 6th, making it 8-5. Hill accounted for much of the damage, as he contributed a bases-loaded triple to drive in three runs.
Colorado scored once in the 6th and again in the 7th to cut Arizona’s lead to one, but David Hernandez and closer J.J. Putz preserved the victory for the Diamondbacks.

The Arizona Diamondbacks take on the Colorado Rockies on Saturday in the second game of a four game series. The Diamondbacks are still in the playoff hunt, but at 4½ games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second NL Wild Card, they'll need their best effort and a lot of luck to get there.
Patrick Corbin (6-7, 4.02 ERA) will pitch for Arizona. The rookie has been in and out of the majors all season, moving back and forth from Triple-A Reno as needed. His last outing for the Diamondbacks saw him give up only two runs over eight innings in a 10-2 Diamondback win over the San Francisco Giants. Jhoulys Chacin (2-5, 4.58 ERA) will be on the hill for the Rockies.

Ah, Coors Field, a surefire cure for any anemic offense. And, as Gonzo said during the game, "The worst place to be if you have must-win games." With a combined eight runs scored in the first three innings, it certainly felt like it would be "one of those games."
Thankfully, it was one of those games just for us. The Diamondbacks' bats came alive, the Rockies' arms kept throwing balls, and Arizona scored in eight of nine innings to take the opening game of the series.

The Arizona Diamondbacks head to Coors Field to take on the Colorado Rockies this weekend in what is turning out to be a must win series to keep any semblance of a chance at a playoff spot.
Currently 12.5 games back in the NL West and 5.5 back in the NL Wild Card race, The D-backs are dangerously close to becoming irrelevant for the rest of the season. A sweep of the last place Rockies would go a long way in helping that cause.
Wade Miley (15-10, 3.10 ERA) takes the bump for Arizona, looking to continue his success against Colorado. Miley is 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in four career appearances against the Rockies, three of them starts. He is 1-2 with a 4.85 ERA over his last four starts.
Colorado will counter with Drew Pomeranz (1-9, 5.06), currently riding a 12-start winless stretch. Pomeranz is 0-6 with a 6.52 ERA since his last win against the Nationals on July 6.
First pitch is set for 5:10 p.m. PT with coverage on Fox Sports Arizona and KTAR 620 AM.
