U.S. Olympic Team Medal Count: America Stays On Top

The second weekend at the 2012 Olympic Games in London is well underway. Saturday brought with it the last day of pool swimming and the second day of track and field. The United States and China once again excelled in the pool and once again remain locked in a battle at the top of the medal count lederboard.

After Saturday's gold medal events, the United States has 54 total medals and 26 gold medals. China is just a step behind in both totals, with 53 medals and 25 gold medals. Great Britain, which picked up three track and field gold medals, has moved ahead of Russia and sits in third place with 29 total medals.

Here are the total medal leaders at the end of Saturday's events:

1. United States - 54 (26, 13, 15)
2. China - 53 (25, 16, 12)
3. Great Britain - 29 (14, 7, 8)
4. Russia - 28 (3, 15, 10)
5. Japan - 24 (2, 10, 12)
