Stay connected for news and updates

St. Louis starting pitcher Joe Kelly stifled the Diamondbacks Tuesday night, leading the Cardinals to a 8-2 victory in the opener of a three game series. Kelly picked up his third victory of the season as the right-hander went 6 1/3 innings, only allowing two runs and striking out six.

Ian Kennedy matched Kelly pitch-for-pitch in the early innings, as the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. Allen Craig led off the inning with a single and Matt Holliday followed by depositing two-run home run into the left-field seats.

The game remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when John Jay homered to right field to extend the Cardinals lead to three.

Kelly shutout the Diamondbacks for the first six innings of the game before Miguel Montero followed a Justin Upton single with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh. Arizona had a runner on second with two-outs in the seventh, but Stephen Drew struck out looking to end the inning.

After the Diamondbacks cut the St. Louis lead to one run, the Cardinals picked up two runs in the bottom of the seventh aided by two Diamondback errors.

St. Louis broke the game open in the bottom of the eight with three more runs off a two-run double from pitch-hitter Matt Carpenter and an RBI single from John Jay.

The Diamondbacks will look to even the series tomorrow when they send Joe Saunders to the mound against Adam Wainwright from St. Louis.
