Beanie Wells Injury: Wells Expected To Make Preseason Debut Thursday

After missing Arizona's first three preseason games while recovering from offseason knee surgery, Beanie Wells is expected to make his preseason debut Thursday when the Cardinals travel to Tennessee to face the Titans, according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.

Wells had surgery on his right knee in January and has since been slowly been progressing toward a comeback. He began training camp on the physically unable to perform list, but was activated Aug. 7 and began practicing with the team. There was an outside chance he would return for Friday's game against the Raiders, but will instead make his 2012 debut next week.

After early reports said Wells was "tentative" in practice, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said Wells has looked better lately.

Wells had a career year last season, rushing for 1,047 yards and 10 touchdowns in 14 games.

Victim Of Shooting Near Cardinals-Raiders Game In Stable Condition

The shooting that took place around 9:30 p.m. Friday night during the Raiders-Cardinals game in Glendale was apparently "fan-based", writes D.S. Woodfill of the Arizona Republic.

It was the shooter who called 911 and told operators that he accidentally shot the victim in a parking lot near a hotel close to the stadium, following an argument. He stayed on the scene and was taken into custody as the victim was transported to a local hospital. It is not known at this time if either person involved actually went to the game, though they were in the area with that intention.

Reports late last night were that the victim was shot in the face and that he had life threatening injuries, but his condition has been updated to stable and he is expected to survive. It has been reported that he is 30 years old, but police are currently not releasing the names of the shooter and victim, citing the pending investigation and charges.

Levi Brown Injury: Cardinals Lose Starting Tackle To Torn Triceps, Could Miss Season

The Arizona Cardinals might have won Friday night's preseason game with the Raiders, but they suffered a much greater loss to their offensive line. According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, starting left tackle Levi Brown has torn his triceps muscle and could miss the entire regular season. The best-case scenario would be a return in three months or so.

It should be noted that the tear has not been confirmed by Arizona, but it is believed within the league that is indeed the injury Brown has suffered.

This is a big blow to the Cardinals offense. For a unit that struggled to consistently move the ball last season, losing one of their better linemen is not going to help matters at all. In addition to naming a starting quarterback, look for any and all options to be discussed as the coaching staff looks to solidify the offensive line.

More to come shortly.

Raiders Vs. Cardinals: Defense Impresses In Review Of Arizona's Week 2 Win

The Arizona Cardinals picked up their first win of the 2012 preseason, defeating the Oakland Raiders, 31-27, Friday night. SB Nation Cardinals blog Revenge of the Birds has a detailed reaction to the game, highlighting players on both sides of the ball who contributed to the win.

The defense looked particularly good, as Revenge of the Birds explains:

It was an inspiring game for the Cardinals 1st team Defense, as they managed to limit Carson Palmer and the Raiders Offense to only 11 points in the 1st Half. S Kerry Rhodes had the only interception for the Cardinals, brining a pass by Palmer back 60 yards into the Cardinals endzone. The Cardinals were also successful on the fumble front, with LBers Stewart Bradley and Clark Haggans both recovering two each. All in all, compared to the last two outings, it was a much more productive day for the Cardinals defense.

Those previous two outings, of course, were the 17-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints in the Hall of Fame game and the 27-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 of the preseason. The defense gave up 375 total yards to the Saints and 356 to the Chiefs, compared to only 222 vs. the Raiders.

Cardinals 31, Raiders 27: Reactions From Ken Whisenhunt, Players

The Arizona Cardinals came away Friday night with their first preseason victory, a 31-27 win over the Raiders. Here are some of the reactions to the game, including the injury to offensive lineman Levi Brown, the Cardinals quarterback situation and the play of young Justin Bethel.

On the injury to Levi Brown:

Ken Whisenhunt didn't have any information to give the media after the game. "I know it's got something to do with his tricep, but we will have more info and cue you guys up on that tomorrow," he said after the game.

Larry Fitzgerald expressed a little more concern. "I went over and checked on him and I asked him how was he feeling, and he said he knows he hurt something," he told reporters. "Whenever you hear anything like that you know it's normally not good."

Center Lyle Sendlein said it would be hard to replace Levi if he has to miss any extended time. "You can't just call 1-800-lefttackle," he said.

On the quarterback play:

Ken Whisenhunt did not give anything away after the game about who the starter might be, or if he made a decision. "We didn't get a lot of plays with John (Skelton), so it's hard to say," he said after halftime. Skelton only got five snaps, including a kneel down to end the half, but in those first four plays, the team scored a touchdown. The plan was to get Skelton more snaps, but the Raiders went on a long drive. Whiz did not want to send the starting offensive line back out in the second half and did not want to have Skelton play behind the second-team line. "I think I've got to get John some extended time next week," he said.

As for the pressure that Kevin Kolb was under, including the safety, Whiz simply said that they would look at the tape. "I think it's a combination of things," he said. On the safety, Kevin Kolb said he really didn't know what happened and would have to look at the tape to see if he could have gotten the ball away quicker.

On Ryan Williams' return:

Ken Whisenhunt said, "I think he looked very good, he had some good runs. It was nice to see him back on the field for us."

Williams was like a kid, saying he felt like he was six years old. "I can't lie, i was kind of scared, starting the game off getting that first hand off, but as soon as I got hit and tackled the rest was history," he said. "I was back to my regular self."

On the good start by the team defensively:

"They (the defense) set the tone very well on that first series," said Whiz. He said the team responded well. Calais Campbell said, "we saw it as a challenge, so we had to go out there and show him (Coach Whiz) we could do it. We put ourselves in that situation, and we went out and played our heart out. we played well."

Cardinals Vs. Raiders Final Score: Arizona Hangs On For 31-27 Win

The Arizona Cardinals got their first win of t he 2012 preseason, knocking off the Oakland Raiders 31-27 Friday night.

Kevin Kolb started the game for the Cardinals as he continues to battle John Skeleton for the starting job. Kolb played the first four series for Arizona, leading the Cardinals on a touchdown drive, but also yielding a safety. Kolb completed 3-of-6 passes for 22 yards. He started out strong, completing his first three passes of the game. Skeleton made only a brief appearance Friday, playing one full series. He completed all three of his passes for 23 yards and a touchdown.

Ryan Williams made his 2012 preseason debut Friday, rushing for 25 yards and a touchdown on five carries. It was Williams first appearance in a game in almost a full year. Williams tore his patellar tendon last year on August 19.

Cardinals See Enough Of Kolb, Skelton In 1st Half Vs. Raiders, Lead 24-11

The Arizona Cardinals led the Oakland Raiders 24-11 at halftime of their Friday night preseason game. But despite some great special teams play and a defense that forced turnovers, of course the biggest storyline is about the quarterbacks.

Kevin Kolb played three series in the first half and John Skelton had one. Both led the team to a touchdown in their first series. Kolb was 3/3 for 22 yards in a seven play, 41-yard drive in their opening possession that gave the Cards a 7-0 lead. The drive was set up by a 46-yard Patrick Peterson punt return.

Skelton took the the offense four plays and 23 yards, completing a three-yard pass to Anthony Sherman to find the end zone. He was 3/3 for 23 yards and the score. The drive was set up by a fumble by Oakland that Daryl Washington forced and Stewart Bradley recovered.

Kolb's night after the first drive was more of the same problems -- bad pass protection, holding on to the ball too long and sacks.

However, the defense forced three turnovers in the half, Patrick Peterson had a 46-yard punt return. Rookie Justin Bethel blocked a punt, recovered it and ran with it for a touchdown.

Running back Ryan Williams, who was in his first game action in almost a year, carried the ball five times for 25 yards and a score, including a crowd-electrifying 15-yarder.

Cardinals Vs. Raiders: Kevin Kolb's Play Is Up And Down

The Arizona Cardinals expected to get a good amount of playing times from their starters, including both of their quarterbacks battling for the starting job. Kevin Kolb got the start on Friday night and started out looking like the quarterback the team has hoped he would be. He effectively drove the team to a touchdown in their opening possession. He was 3/3 for 22 yards and showed composure in the pocket. He even took a pretty good hit on his third completion.

However, his night of positives ended there. He didn't complete another pass, was sacked three times, once for a safety and was penalized for intentional grounding.

He did not get much help from his offensive line, though. On those sacks, he did stay in the pocket, but within seconds was hounded by the pass rush. How will the coaching staff see this? It is hard to tell. He did have some positives, but the issues of getting sacked, whether that blame lies more with the offensive line or with Kolb, they continue to remain with Kolb in as quarterback.

Cardinals Vs. Raiders Score Update: Kolb Good, Then Not So Good In 1st Quarter As Raiders Lead 8-7

The Arizona Cardinals starters came out fired up to start the game. They started out on defense, as the Oakland raiders won the toss. Arizona forced a three-and-out to start the game and then scored a touchdown on their opening drive.

The intensity let up a little bit after that.

Kevin Kolb and Ryan Williams led a very efficient drive. After Patrick Peterson electrified the home crowd with a 46-yard punt return, the Cardinals went 41 yards on seven plays to get into the end zone. Kolb was 3/3 for 22 yards and showed some composure in the pocket. Williams carried the ball four times for 19 yards and scored from three yards out.

The next drive the defense struggled more. A couple of big plays by Darren McFadden and a couple of penalties had the Raiders with first-and-goal at the one. The defense held and Sebastian Janikowski hit a field goal from 18 yards out to make it 7-3.

On the next offensive possession, Kevin Kolb was hit with an intentional grounding penalty and then was sacked in the end zone for a safety. Kolb stepped up in the pocket, only to get met by defenders who beat Adam Snyder and D'Anthony Batiste. That made it 7-5 Cardinals.

The Raiders moved the ball down the field, but when Darren McFadden couldn't get both feet in bounds on a pass play that would have had him running to the end zone, Oakland had to settle for a 40-yard kick to take an 8-7 lead.

Ryan Williams carried the ball five times for 25 yards. Kolb was 3/4 for 22 yards.

The Arizona Cardinals are set to play the Oakland Raiders in their home preseason opener. They will do so with some young players getting some looks in the lineup. Running back Ryan Williams, who was injured during the 2011 preseason and lost his entire season to a torn patella tendon, will make the start at running back for Arizona. Beanie Wells is still recovering from his offseason knee scope. He hopes to play next week against the Titans.

Here is the full list of who will not play for the Cardinals:

  • CB Michael Adams
  • CB Greg Toler
  • RB LaRod Stephens-Howling
  • FB Jared Crank

As a result, Williams will start for Wells, as noted. Veteran Clark Haggans gets the start at linebacker. Stewart Bradley starts again for Lenon. Early Doucet starts for Roberts at receiver.

Not related to injury, D'Anthony Batiste gets the start at right tackle over Jeremy Bridges.

With the injuries at receiver and cornerback, rookies Michael Floyd and Jamell Fleming should get extended looks. Fans have been calling for more Floyd. They should get their wish.

Arizona Cardinals Vs. Oakland Raiders Game Preview: Matt Leinart Returns, QB Battle Continues

It was 2008 and just like this week the Arizona Cardinals were preparing for a preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. This time the game is at University of Phoenix Stadium instead of "The Blackhole".

A highly touted, potential franchise quarterback, was trying to hold off the second string quarterback to earn the starting job. His name was current Raider back up QB Matt Leinart and the second string QB was Kurt Warner. Leinart bombed going 4-12 for 24 yards with three interceptions and no touchdowns. For me, it was the moment that signaled the end of the Leinart era (can we call it an era?).

Could we witness a similar situation with Kevin Kolb when the Cards and Raiders meet Friday night at 7:00 PM? Kolb is scheduled to start and John Skelton will follow. Through two games in the preseason the former Philadelphia Eagles second round draft pick is 2-9 for 25 yards and one interception. Skelton has been better, but not much going 7-12 with 67 yards and an INT.

Ken Whisenhunt made it known this week during practice quarterback isn't the only position he is upset with and the starters will play until they show progress.

The offensive and defensive line starters were manhandled in the trenches during the Cards 27-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, which dropped them to 0-2 in the preseason.

If Arizona's defense doesn't improve it could get ugly.

Raiders running back Darren McFadden had three touches, two runs and one pass, totaling 38 yards in Oakland's first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. The silver and black fell 3-0 to Dallas.

The explosive, versatile back is expected to get a longer look against the Cards as he tries to bounce back from an injury plagued season. If Ray Horton's defense isn't sharp, winning battles at the line of scrimmage and solid with their tackling, McFadden will run wild.

After the game Friday night, the Cardinals will continue their preseason Thursday when they hit the road to take on the Tennessee Titans. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN at 5:00 PM.

Cardinals Training Camp Update: Whisenhunt Gives The Players The Morning Off, Floyd Working Way Up

If you are a fan of the Cardinals that planned on coming to see the Cardinals and their walk-through practice this morning, then you undoubtedly walked away disappointed. Right before practice began, Whisenhunt made a last minute call to give everyone the day off to hit the movie theaters. Each player had the option of seeing the new Bourne movie (which Whisenhunt saw), Total Recall or The Campaign starring Will Ferrell.

In all, Whiz made the decision based on a couple of different factors. He noted that the players have been working incredibly hard this week and that they deserved a little time off before they take the field against the Raiders this Friday. There is one condition, however. The players promised to hold up their end of the bargain and practice as hard as they possibly can this afternoon. We'll see if they follow through.

As for Friday, the team is getting prepared to make their preseason home debut. Whiz noted that he is confident Ryan Williams will play, but it seems that Beanie Wells will be doubtful.

"I don't know," Whisenhunt said with a lack of confidence. "He was obviously a little rusty the first day... It's going to be a function of whether his soreness level drops. He was a little sore after working the first couple of days... We'll see how he feels."

Whisenhunt also commented on rookie Michael Floyd and what he has seen out of him so far this camp. "I've seen progress. He's done some good things for us. I think the way he works on the field consistently; he's been consistent."

Whiz also didn't rule out the possibility of Floyd working his way up the depth chart before the season begins. He reiterated that Floyd needs to remain consistent and, "if he wants to get on the field and play and contribute, he better do it well or do it the right way."

There is the possibility of Floyd even starting the season as the #2 receiver, which Whisenhunt didn't rule out. Instead, he noted that there are still three games and plenty of time left for Floyd to prove himself. "To the degree of his involvement is up to him," Whisenhunt said.

Other quick notes:

Rich Bartel, after missing practice on Tuesday with a stomach virus, will be available to play on Friday.

Paris Lenon is close to a return after spraining his ankle, but Whisenhunt seemed really enthusiastic about what Stewart Bradley has done in his absence.

If you caught my piece on A.J. Jefferson, then you know that he is in a battle just to make the roster after starting with so much success last season. Whisenhunt noted that he has been, "up and down" and that he is in a battle with a bunch of other good cornerbacks now. We'll see how that pans out in the coming weeks.

Once again, I'll be at the afternoon practice and have more for you tonight and tomorrow morning.

Arizona Cardinals Training Camp Update: Ken Whisenhunt Dismisses Schefter Report

A report came out from Adam Schefter of ESPN earlier this morning that stated that John Skelton currently holds a lead in the quarterback competition with Kevin Kolb and that he is currently slated to be the starter. The report cited "sources" that were not made available to the public and Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt was very wary of that. He noted that people often do that as a way for them to making things up.

He said that he hasn't, "Gotten into thinking about favorites or longshots," when it comes to the quarterback position, or any position for that matter. Skelton and Kolb are both in the race still and even if Whiz has a favorite right now, there is no definite choice. He said that to choose based on a practice or two would be foolish, simply because that does not show consistency.

Also, it sounds like D'Anthony Batiste will start at right tackle for the Cardinals on Friday. Jeremy Bridges was there before, but he has since been demoted to the second unit right guard. Bobby Massie just doesn't fit the role of a starting tackle yet, either. I guess it's a good thing that he is in the tackle spot ahead of Bridges on the second unit, though.

Javarris James is back from injury now after having torn abductor muscle. But as soon as it seems like the Cards are starting to gain some more running back depth, Whiz reported this afternoon that LaRod Stephens-Howling pulled his groin before the game against the Chiefs. The team is going to be "conservative" with him and not rush his return. Still, I wouldn't anticipate LSH being out for too long.

Lastly, Whisenhunt noted that he likes what he has seen from Beanie Wells so far. I noted on Twitter yesterday that he looked really good as well, running with power and speed. I didn't see a single hitch in his step. If he doesn't end up playing on Friday, expect him to play against the Titans next week.

I'll have more for you later tonight after the afternoon practice.

John Skelton's Edge Over Kevin Kolb Might Not Be As Much As Believed

Despite a report by Adam Schefter that John Skelton is the favorite to win the starting quarterback job for the Arizona Cardinals, apparently he is not favored by much. According to team reporter Darren Urban, who spoke to head coach Ken Whisenhunt, there is nothing new to report.

Tweeted Urban,

kingehdee Edward Salazar
in reply to @kingehdee

@kingehdee @kentsomers Whiz insists there is nothing to report right now. If he is "leading" it's by the slimmest of margins.
Aug 14 via TweetDeck Favorite Retweet Reply

This jives with what the team has said all along. The two are not separated by much at this point. Neither has played particularly well in practice or in games consistently.

The decision may take the rest of the preseason. Whisenhunt insists on playing the guy who gives the team the best chance to win. So far, neither has shown that. So while Skelton may be the "favorite," it is by no means a certainty.

Adam Schefter Reports That John Skelton Is In Lead For Cardinals QB Starting Job

The Arizona Cardinals still do not know who will be their starting quarterback come September 9 when they host the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 of the regular season. Neither Kevin Kolb nor John Skelton have stood out in practice or the preseason as to who is clearly better. However, ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that, depite the fact that Kevin Kolb will start on Friday against the Oakland Raiders, Skelton is the favorite to win the starting job.

Skelton has not been fantastic by any means and threw an interception in his last game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Kolb was 1/5 for 21 yards.

If Kolb loses the job, it will be the second team that he has been named the starter for only to have injuries and the play of another quarterback relegate him to the bench.

Don't expect him to be cut from the team if he is not the starter. The team has already paid him a $7 million bonus this year.

The Cardinals play the Oakland raiders at home on Friday.

Arizona Cardinals Training Camp Update: Whiz Still Upset, Williams To Play On Friday

After the morning practice was over, the media caught up with Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt, who, by all accounts, still seemed pretty upset at his team's performance in Kansas City. He noted that the energy just didn't seem to be there on either side of the ball and that the complacency needs to come to an end.

"I'm displeased with all units," said Whisenhunt begrudgingly. "I would say that there's a few players that are doing what we want them to do, but there's not enough of the 22 starters getting it done they way we want to get it done."

He continued by saying that there will be no set snap count or quarter length for how long the starters will play against Oakland. They will likely play until Whiz sees what he wants to see: progress. Quarterback Kevin Kolb spoke about what he has seen so far after the morning practice.

When asked what he wants to see out of the offense this week, Kolb replied with a simple, "a lot". "Focus, touchdowns, intensity, details and that comes from top to bottom all the way from myself and John [Skelton] to the second and third teams. There's just a lot of details that we have to touch up."

Also, Jeff King is now off of the PUP list and according to both him and Coach Whisenhunt, he is expected to play when they travel to Tennessee to take on the Titans. It'll be a big boost to the offense having him back.

"There's no questioning his production, especially early in the season last year," Whisenhunt said of King. "I think that it gives us more versatility when you have a guy that can block like he can, but you can still use him in some facets of the pass game."

You may have caught SB Nation Arizona writer Cody Ulm's update earlier on Larry Fitzgerald winning another humanitarian award for his efforts in the community. Whiz didn't shy away from addressing what that means to him as his coach and what it's like having a player and a person the caliber of Fitz on the team. "I don't think that there's many guys that mean as much to the game from the standpoint of football-wise and also mean as much to a community or to other people as Larry does."

Last but certainly not least, it sounds like Ryan Williams will participate in Friday's game against the Raiders in some fashion. If his knee doesn't swell up, expect to see him on the field at University of Phoenix stadium this weekend. As for Beanie Wells, he said he is itching to get back on the field and knows that he can add another dynamic to the offense.

I'll have more after the afternoon practice.

Arizona Cardinals Remove TE Jeff King From PUP

As the Arizona Cardinals begin their three days of practice in Flagstaff, they made one move with their roster. Tight end Jeff King, who had offseason surgery on his quad, was removed from the preseason PUP list and started practicing on Monday.

King, who led the tight ends on the team with receptions a year ago, is expected to be a starter and get playing time, as he is considered the best blocking tight end on the squad. His receptions were a bonus. He had 27 catches for 271 yards and three touchdowns.

King was at work right away in practice, as he was working in 7-on-7 drills right at the start of practice.

He and Beanie Wells were both on the preseason PUP at the start of training camp. Both are now active.
