2012 Olympics: Arizona Finishes Summer Games With Plenty Of Medalists

Arizona sent a healthy number of athletes to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Plenty of those athletes will be bringing medals back to the Southwest as part of the United States' triumphant run at the XXX Olympiad.

Matt Grevers who swims with a club out of Tucson, picked up a full three medals at the Games, including an individual gold and team gold and a team silver medal. Breeja Larson from Mesa also won a gold medal in swimming, Caitlin Leverenz of Tucson won a silver and Nick Thoman from U of A won a silver and a gold in the pool.

Will Claye was part of a dominant U.S. track and field team, picking up the bronze medal in the long jump and the silver medal in the triple jump. Arizona native Brigetta Barrett also picked up track and field honors, taking the silver in the women's high jump.

Arizona colleges were well represented on the latest version of the Dream Team roster. James Harden, a former ASU Sun Devil, joined former Arizona Wildcats player Andre Iguodala as the men's basketball team won their rematch against Spain to take home their second straight gold medal.

In another big rematch, the United States women's soccer team defeated Japan in a sequel to last year's World Cup final. ASU alumnus Amy LePeilbet contributed to the USWNT as a defender during their gold medal run.

In the most impressive display of dominance by the United States in the Summer Games, the women's basketball game won their fifth straight gold medal by defeating France. No country has ever won five straight gold medals in an event in the Olympics. Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury was once again part of that unstoppable team.

Finally, Brady Ellison of Glendale helped the United States to a silver medal in the men's team archery competition.
