2012 Summer Olympics Medal Count: United States Still Near The Top Of The List

The 2012 Olympic Games in London will kick off its third day of medal competition on Monday. As expected, China is making a very strong showing already. In the early going, China is leading all countries in both total medals and gold medals -- although are still very much within striking distance for the Unites States.

China has 12 total medals, but the U.S. is right behind, with 11. Although China's six gold medals are double the United States' three, there are still many more days of competition -- including the men's team gymnastics on Monday, where the American men are very much poised to pull off an upset.

Eight of the United States' total medals are in swimming, which is perhaps to be expected, including two of the gold medals. The third U.S. gold came in shooting. Of China's six golds, two each are in swimming and shooting, one is in diving and one is in weightlifting.
