The XXX Olympiad will get underway on July 27 as the 2012 Olympics kick off in London. The country of course will be watching as the Summer Games grip the attention of sports fans and casual viewers alike. There will be a full 19 Olympic athletes representing the Arizona area, either as alumni of an Arizona school or as residents of the state.
There will be six athletes representing the Arizona Wildcats. The most well-known is Andre Iguodala, who is a part of the U.S. men's basketball team and plays for the Philadelphia 76ers. Fellow Wildcats are Georganne Moline, competing in the 400m hurdles, Clark Burckle in the 200m breast stroke, Abdi Abdirahman in the marathon, Todd Wells in mountain bike and Bigetta Barrett in high jump.
From the Arizona St. Sun Devils will be another five athletes, led by James Harden of the Oklahoma City Thunder on the men's basketball team. Desiree Davila will compete in marathon, Kelsey Campbell in wrestling, Ryan Whiting in shot put and Amy LePeilbet will be a member of the women's national soccer team.
Other residents of the state competing will be Caitlin Leverenz in two different swimming events, Diana Taurasi of the Mercury participating as a member of the women's national basketball team, Will Claye in long jump and triple jump, Brady Ellison in archery, Lopez Lomong in the 5,000m run, Alexander Naddour as an alternate in men's gymnastics, and Kyle Alcorn in the 3,000m steeplechase.
