Arizona Wins College World Series, Tops South Carolina 4-1

South Carolina's reign of terror over college baseball is now over!

Arizona scored three runs in the top of the 9th to break a 1-1 tie en route to a captivating victory over University of South Carolina for the 2012 national title. Mat Troupe got the win after loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth with one out to end the thrilling game.

South Carolina was vying for a three-peat as champions but Trent Gilbert's three RBIs helped snare the Wildcats first College World Series since 1986. James Farris pitched close to eight strong innings, giving up two hits and one run while striking out four. It wasn't until the Wildcats got to right handed ace Matt Price that reclaimed the lead.

The teams traded more outs than runs to create plenty of drama, but in the end the Wildcat machine that never trailed once throughout the entirety of the College World Series prevailed.

College World Series, Arizona vs. South Carolina: Wildcats Send James Farris To Mound For Game Two

The Arizona Wildcats are just a few hours away from what could be their final game of the season. Should the Wildcats win, it would be their fourth national championship in school history and their first since 1986. UA defeated South Carolina in the first game of the College World Series by a score of 5-1, and now they'll look to end the series on Monday night.

Many had wondered if manager Andy Lopez would go with ace Kurt Heyer on short rest this evening, but the team has elected to rest him in case a third game is required to determine a champion. Instead, Arizona will go with right-handed sophomore James Farris. Ryan Finley of the Arizona Daily Star was the first to report the news.

Farris went 7-3 with an ERA of 4.18 in 16 starts this season. His most recent start, which came June 3 against Louisville, was a complete game effort in which he struck out seven batters. Farris is more than capable of tossing a great game on the mound, although he will need to control his emotions and adrenaline in the heat of Omaha. More than 22,000 fans are expected for the game.

First pitch for game two is set for 5:10 p.m. in Tucson. ESPN will have the broadcast.

Arizona Vs. South Carolina, 2012 CWS: Wildcats Could Clinch National Title On Monday Night

The Arizona Wildcats met the South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday night in the first game of the 2012 College World Series Championship Finals. The best-of-three series got off to a great start, as the Wildcats won by a final score of 5-1.

The Wildcats, who have not yet lost a game since arriving in Omaha, only need to win one more game in order to become the national champions. The Gamecocks have played their best baseball in elimination games during the tournament and will be the home team in Game 2, so Arizona should not assume that a two-game sweep is a foregone conclusion.

The second game of the Championship Finals will take place on Monday in Omaha at TD Ameritrade Park. First pitch will be at 5:00 p.m. PT and will be televised on ESPN.

At the end of nine innings, Arizona had won by a final score of 5-1. Now one win is all that stands between the Wildcats and a national championship.

Arizona Vs. Florida State, 2012 CWS Scores: Wildcats Dominate Seminoles, Win 10-3 To Advance To Championship Finals

The Arizona Wildcats improved to 3-0 in the 2012 College World Series Thursday night with a 10-3 victory over the Florida State Seminoles. It was a dominant performance from the Wildcats, who opened with a six run first inning and never looked back.

Arizona wasted no time in getting to Seminoles starting pitcher Brandon Leibrandt, who gifted four of the six runs the Wildcats scored. After giving up a leadoff single to Joey Rickard, a throwing error by Leibrandt set up runners at the corners with no outs. Alex Mejia then singled, driving in the first run. Leibrandt walked the next man up, loading the bases. A sacrifice fly by Seth Mejias-Brean made it 2-0 Wildcats, and after a double steal another walk loaded the bases again. Joeseph Maggi then scored two with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by left fielder Jose Brizuela. That was it for Leibrandt, who exited the game having collected only one out. Luke Weaver took the mound and gave up a two RBI single to Trent Gilbert before ending the inning.

Florida State got on the board in the fourth inning, but the damage was limited to an RBI double by Justin Gonzalez. Arizona responded immediately, adding four more in the bottom of the inning. Robert Refsnyder started things with a solo home run, Bobby Brown a two RBI home run, and an RBI single by Joey Rickard made it 10-1 Arizona.

Florida State picked up 11 hits and added two more runs, but the outcome of the game was never in question. Arizona starting pitcher Kurt Heyer gave up managed to hold the Seminoles to two runs over 7.1 innings, and Tyler Crawford gave up one run on two hits in 1.2 innings of relief. The loss eliminates Florida State and sends Arizona to the Championship Finals, where they will face the winner of Arkansas vs. South Carolina. College World Series 2012 Bracket: Arizona Wildcats To Face Florida State Seminoles

The Arizona Wildcats will next face the Florida State Seminoles in the 2012 College World Series, after the Seminoles beat the UCLA Bruins 4-1 Tuesday night. 2012 College World Series: Arizona Wildcats Defeat Florida State In 12 Innings

The Arizona Wildcats needed 12 innings to pull out a victory over the Florida St. Seminoles, but they somehow managed to pull out a 4-3 victory in front of more than 22,000 spectators in Omaha. The 'Cats will now face Pac-12 rival UCLA on Sunday evening at 8 p.m. ET. FSU will take on Stony Brook in the earlier game that day.

Arizona ace Kurt Heyer pitched very well against a red-hot FSU lineup, working 7.2 innings of three-run ball. Only one of the runs that scored were earned. He allowed just six hits and three walks, striking out three in the process.

UA took an early 2-1 lead in the third inning and added on a run in the fifth, but the Seminoles rallied with two outs to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth. That score held through numerous scoring opportunities for both sides until the 12th inning rolled around.

Joey Rickard sent a one-out double into the gap to get into scoring position, and then All-Conference selection Johnny Field drove him home with a line drive double of his own. UA would head to the bottom half of the inning with a 4-3 lead.

Matt Troupe came in for the save. He retired the first batter, but then hit the next with a pitch. After a wild pitch and a groundout moved the runner to third with two outs, Devon Travis made his way to the plate. Troupe took the count to 3-2, and eventually struck Travis out on a low fastball.

Arizona Wildcats Baseball Advances To Omaha Following Win Over St. John's

The Arizona Wildcats are heading to Omaha for the 2012 College World Series. This was a team that battled and faced adversity all year, but they stuck together and swept St. John's in Super Regional action to secure one of the final eight spots in the tournament.

UA took an early 3-0 lead on Saturday afternoon and continued to add on in the middle innings on their way to a 7-4 victory. Konner Wade threw nine innings of very impressive ball, allowing just six hits to a hot St. John's lineup.

Seth Mejias-Brean went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Bobby Brown had two hits and drove in two runs. Arizona has scored seven or more runs in all five of their postseason games thus far.

This is a great day for Wildcats baseball, the city of Tucson and the University of Arizona. It remains to be seen who Arizona will play next week in Omaha, but you can rest assured manager Andy Lopez will have his club ready.

2012 College World Series Schedule: Arizona Wildcats Look To Clinch Trip To Omaha

The Arizona Wildcats are one game away from Omaha and the College World Series. After pulling off a thrilling comeback victory on Friday against St. John's by a score of 7-6, UA will take the field again on Saturday afternoon looking to win the series.

First pitch from Tucson is set for noon, which means yet another hot and miserable day for the players and fans. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD. You can also find it streamed live on ESPN3.com.

The Wildcats have arguably the best offense of any team remaining in the tournament, but their pitching staff really needs to step up if they hope to go far. St. John's will not go down without a fight, but it's definitely in Arizona's best interest to avoid a win-or-go-home game three on Sunday.

College World Series: Arizona Wildcats Defeat St John's In 10th Inning

The Arizona Wildcats trailed early to St. John's on Friday afternoon, but one of the nation's best offenses chipped away in the middle innings and rallied late in the 10th to claim a huge 7-6 victory in the first game of the NCAA Super Regionals. UA is now just one more win away from advancing to Omaha for the College World Series, which consists of the four best teams in the nation.

Kurt Heyer worked nine innings for the Wildcats and threw 127 pitches. He allowed 15 hits and six runs, although he did not walk anyone. Heyer exited in the tenth inning after St. John's took a 6-5 lead.

Arizona came to the plate in the bottom of the 10th and Robert Refsnyder led off with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt was laid down to move him into scoring position, Bobby Brown hit a seeing-eye up the middle to tie the game at 6-6. After another single up the middle and walk to catcher Riley Moore, Trent Gilbert came to the plate with a chance to win it.

Gilbert swung and missed at the first two pitches and then took a fastball low in the zone. He then lined a 1-2 fastball at the letters into right-center field, giving the Wildcats a 7-6 walk-off victory.

2012 College World Series: Arizona Wildcats Face St. John's In Super Regionals

SJU won the North Carolina regional, defeating the No. 5 ranked Tar Heels (and others) to advance to this stage in the competition. They have a solid offense and strong pitching staff, although they will be battling one intense element this weekend they'll have no control over: heat.

All three games are scheduled during the middle of the day in Tucson. Temperatures are expected to be above 100 each day, which could be a big advantage for the Wildcats. The athletic department has strongly urged those attending the game to stay hydrated and to wear white to keep cool. Water will be provided for free to those who want it.

2012 MLB Draft Results: Five Arizona Wildcats Selected On Second Day

The Arizona Wildcats are currently in what has been their most successful season in years. Armed with a strong pitching staff and elite lineup of hitters, UA has made quick work of the opposition this season. With the 2012 MLB Draft taking place this week it was a safe bet to see a bunch of guys from the team be selected to continue their baseball careers as professionals.

On day two of the draft, which consisted of rounds two through 15, five players from the University of Arizona were chosen.

The first player selected was shortstop Alex Mejia, the Pac-12's Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Mejia was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth round with the 150th overall pick.

Next off the board was outfielder Robert Refsnyder. He was taken drafted by the Yankees in the fifth round with the 187th pick. Ace pitcher Kurt Heyer was taken in the sixth round by the Cardinals. Seth Mejias-Bream, the talented third baseman for Arizona, was selected by the Reds in the eighth round.

Last but not least is center fielder Joey Rickard. He was taken by the Rays in the ninth round with the 302nd overall pick. He batted .326 this year and led UA with 17 stolen bases.

These five players (and any others taken on the third day of the draft) will likely begin negotiating deals with their new teams, although they will continue playing for the Wildcats as they make a run in the College World Series.

The Arizona Wildcats have found a recipe for success at the 2012 College World Series thus far: hitting, hitting and more hitting. And then maybe a little more hitting added onto that.

For the second game in a row Arizona clobbered the opposition for 15+ runs and 20+ hits, this time handling the Louisville Cardinals by a score of 16-4 on Saturday night. The Wildcats recorded 23 hits against a tough Louisville squad, a team that had previously defeated New Mexico St. on Friday.

Despite trailing early by a score of 1-0, UA rallied for five runs in the third inning, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and then broke the game wide open with seven in the seventh.

As the Wildcats' bats came alive it was starting pitcher Konner Wade who settled into a nice groove. He worked 8+ innings against a strong Cardinals lineup, surrendering four runs (two earned) on ten hits and two walks. He struck out five on the night.

Five starters for Arizona had three or more hits. Pac-12 Player of the Year Alex Mejia went a perfect 5-for-5 with three RBIs, as well.

It was pure dominance from UA on Saturday, and now they are one game away from advancing to the Super Regionals.

Arizona will face the winner of Louisville vs. Missouri on Sunday night at 8 p.m. A win advances them in the tournament, a loss would force a final game on Monday evening to determine a winner of the Tucson regional.

College World Series 2012: Arizona Wildcats Face Louisville Cardinals On Saturday

The Arizona Wildcats won in blowout fashion over the Missouri Tigers on Friday night, and now they look to continue their winning ways against the Louisville Cardinals. In what was a great first game of the Tucson regional, Louisville defeated the New Mexico State Aggies by a score of 3-2 with strong pitching and timely hitting.

Here is the schedule for Saturday at Hi Corbett Field:

Game 3: New Mexico St. vs. Missouri, 4 p.m.

Game 4: Arizona vs. Louisville, 8 p.m.

The start of the UA-UL game could be delayed a bit should the early game go longer than expected. The loser of game three is eliminated from the 2012 College World Series.

The winner of game three will face the loser of Arizona vs. Louisville. The winner of that game, game five, will then face the winner of Arizona vs. Louisville. The team that loses game five is eliminated from the tournament.

The final team standing without two losses wins the regional. Game six is scheduled for Sunday. There is a game seven potentially set for Monday should it be needed to determine a winner.

2012 College World Series Scores: Arizona Wildcats Clobber Missouri In Opening Game

The Arizona Wildcats kicked off their quest for a national championship in a big way on Friday night, knocking off the Missouri Tigers in front of a crowd of 5,086 at Hi Corbett Field. Despite a few early runs from the Tigers it was veteran pitcher Kurt Heyer who completely dominated the rest of the game as the 'Cats went on to claim a 15-3 blowout victory.

Arizona pounded out 20 hits on the evening, quite a few of which were indeed pounded into the ground and bounced over the Mizzou infielders. For a school that has such a strong softball tradition, it sure seemed like the UA hitters had taken notes on how to take advantage of a hard, fast infield in southern Arizona.

The two clubs scored two runs each in the first inning, and Missouri held a 3-2 lead after scratching across another run in the second.

The game was essentially ended in the fourth inning. Arizona used a few infield hits and bloopers to get runners on, and then belted what seemed like an endless barrage of doubles and triples into the spacious outfield in Tucson. A total of seven runs scored for the Wildcats in the fourth, and they added on three runs of insurance in the seventh and eighth innings.

Heyer did not allow a hit after the second inning. He tossed his 12 complete game of the season on 118 pitches, 77 of which were strikes. Heyer recorded seven strikeouts against a Mizzou lineup that was hot coming off a run at the Big 12 Tournament.

Arizona will now face Louisville in game four of the Tucson Regional on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. assuming the earlier game, New Mexico St. vs. Mizzou, finishes without needing multiple extra innings.
