Were it not for a complete collapse by the Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen on Tuesday night, the team would be feeling pretty confident right now, as they would have won a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the best teams in baseball. Instead, they are coming off of an impressive win after a heart-breaking loss and a 1-2 record in the current homestand. Now they host the Milwaukee Brewers, the team that eliminated them a year ago from the playoffs.
However, both teams' fortunes are much different this season. The Brewers lost Prince Fielder in free agency and now sit at 18-26 (even worse than the D-backs' 20-25). They have lost seven of their last 10 games.
Offensively, they are getting great production from reigning MVP Ryan Braun and catcher Jonathan Lucroy. Lucroy is batting .349 and has driven in 29 runs. Braun is hitting .323 with 12 homers and 31 RBI.
The issue is their pitching. Zach Greinke has been great thus far, but the rest of the rotation has been less than stellar. In fact, the Saturday matchup between Greinke and D-backs starter Wade Miley has the promise of a great pitching duel. That game will be aired nationally on MLB Network.
Arizona will get Daniel Hudson back for this series and is expected to start on Sunday. Catcher Miguel Montero should see the field again after missing the last two games of the Dodgers series with a sore groin.
The pitching probables and games schedules are as follows:
Saturday, 7:10 PM: Zach Greinke (5-1, 2.70) vs. Wade Miley (5-1, 2.14)
Sunday, 1:10 PM: Randy Wolf (0-2, 6.02) vs. Daniel Hudson (1-1, 6.00)
