Belmont 2012 Results: Union Rags Delivers Another Thrilling Stretch Run

America received some shocking and disappointing news on Friday when it was announced that I'll Have Another had withdrawn from the 2012 Belmont Stakes with an injury and would be retiring. Just like that, any hope of seeing the first Triple Crown winner in over 30 years went up in smoke.

Those who felt they no longer had a reason to watch the Belmont Stakes on Saturday certainly missed out. The end result was another thrilling, come-from-behind win in the home stretch, just as I'll Have Another had delivered in the Kentucky Derby and the Prekness Stakes.

This time, it was betting favorite Union Rags overtaking the lead runner in the last few hundred yards. Union Rags made his move in the home stretch and overtook Paynter for a photo finish, while Atigun came in third. Union Rags redeemed himself after a tremendously disappointing finish at the Kentucky Derby. Fellow favorite Dullahan fell behind early and was left in the dust.

Belmont Stakes Payout 2012: Hope You Picked Atigun To Show

One of the drawback to an odds-on favorite winning a big race or big game is that there isn't that much of a payout. When I'll Have Another took the 2012 Kentucky Derby, there was a pretty decent payout for a $2.00 bet. At the 2012 Belmont Stakes on Saturday, however, the big money was in picking third-place horse Atigun to show.

Even worse for you as a bettor if you picked Dullahan, as the horse favored at about the same odds as Union Rags prior to the race fell behind early and never climbed back into things.

Below are the payouts for the 2012 Belmont Stakes.

Win: 3-Union Rags: 7.50, 4.20, 3.40
Place: 9-Paynter: 5.10, 3.90
Show: 4-Atigun: 10.60

$1.00 Exacta: 15.70
$1.00 Trifecta: 248.00
$0.10 Superfecta: 95.30
$1.00 Double: 24.20
$1.00 Pick 3: 96.00
$0.50 Pick 4: 320.75
$2.00 Pick 6: 15,050.00

Belmont Stakes Video 2012: Union Rags' Thrilling Run

The 2012 Belmont Stakes took place in New York on Saturday and although there was no Triple Crown champion, there was yet another exhilarating run down the home stretch to crown a winner. In the first two legs of the 2012 Triple Crown, it was I'll Have Another running down Bodemeister at the wire. On Saturday, it was betting favorite Union Rags chasing down Paynter.

Union Rags hung back through most of the race, which is by far the longest of the three Triple Crown runs. As the horses rounded the final turn and headed into the home stretch, Union Rags made his move. Union Rags finally overtook Paynter in the final hundred yards to go ahead by a nose right at the finish line.

Belmont Stakes Winner: Union Rags Wins The 144th Running Of The Belmont Stakes

Union Rags is the winner in the 2012 Belmont Stakes, taking the race from Paynter in the final stretch. Paynter had the lead for almost the entire race, jumping out to a strong start and staying there until Union Rags snuck between him and the rail, taking the race in the final 100 meters. Dullahan, the clear favorite following I'll Have Another's scratch, was never a factor. After starting the race somewhere towards the back of the pack, the horse never advanced past the middle and was fading back towards the rear by the final turn.

It was the second Belmont Stakes win for jockey John Velazquez, who had replaced Julien Leparoux earlier in the week. It was his first ride on Union Rags. Paynter finished in second behind Union Rags, followed by Atigun in third and Street Life in fourth. Union Rags' winning time was 2:30:42, with the final odds given 5-2

Belmont Stakes Odds: Dullahan, Union Rags The New Favorites To Win

The field for the 2012 Belmont Stakes is now wide open after I'll Have Another was scratched on Friday, but that does not mean we will not have a great day of racing on Saturday. There are still quite a few horses capable of putting on a show and will be favored more than others by the odds makers, although it appears that anyone could pull the upset at the final leg of the Triple Crown.

With the afore mentioned I'll Have Another no longer running today, Dullahan (5-1 odds) and Union Rags (6-1 odds) have become the two favorites for the race. Here are the latest odds for the Belmont Stakes:

1. Street Life (Jose Lezcano, 12-1)
2. Unstoppable U (Junior Alvarado, 30-1)
3. Union Rags (John Velazquez, 6-1)
4. Atigun (Julien Leparoux, 30-1)
5. Dullahan (Javier Castellano, 5-1)
6. Ravelo's Boy (Alex Solis, 50-1)
7. Five Sixteen (Rosie Napravnik, 50-1)
8. Guyana Star Dweej (Kent Desormeaux, 50-1)
9. Paynter (Mike Smith, 8-1)
10. Optimizer (Corey Nakatani, 20-1)

Belmont Stakes 2012: Post Positions, TV Schedule, Live Coverage And More

There will be significantly less people setting aside their Saturday to watch the Belmont Stakes in the wake of I'll Have Another being scratched due to an injury. This, of course, is much to the chagrin of NBC, who will not have droves of people tuning in to potentially see the first Triple Crown Winner in over 30 years.

Regardless, the Belmont Stakes will still likely be a thrilling race and the field is now wide open. Dullahan is the new betting favorite and Union Rags, who was one of the favorites at the Kentucky Derby, will attempt to redeem himself after a poor showing at Churchill Downs.

The 2012 Belmont Stakes will be televised on NBC and coverage will begin at 2:00 p.m. PT. Post time for the main event is 6:30 p.m. PT.

A live stream of the Belmont Stakes can be found at NBCSports.com.

2012 Belmont Stakes Odds: Dullahan The New Betting Favorite

The 2012 Belmont Stakes will take place on Saturday and there is significantly less interest in the event that there was just 24 hours ago. The reason for this, of course, is that I'll Have Another has been scratched from the race with an injury and will likely be retiring. It's certainly an ignominious end to the the horse's quest for the Triple Crown.

Of course, this does mean that the race is more or less wide open for the rest of the field. I'll Have Another was the betting favorite before being scratched. Now that the favorite has withdrawn, Dullahan becomes the new betting favorite in the race, with Union Rags and Paynter close behind.

Complete odds for the 2012 Belmont Stakes can be found below.

1-Street Life, 8/1
2-Unstoppable U, 20/1
3-Union Rags, 3/1
4-Atigun, 15/1
5-Dullahan, 9/5
6-Ravelo's Boy, 30/1
7-Five Sixteen, 30/1
8-Guyana Star Dweej, 30/1
9-Paynter, 7/2
10-Optimizer, 15/1
11-I'll Have Another, Scratched
12-My Adonis, 15/1

2012 Belmont Stakes: I'll Have Another Scratched, Won't Race For Triple Crown

There was much excitement heading into the Belmont Stakes as a Triple Crown winner was looking like a possiblity but now the horse favored to win the Belmont Stakes will not be racing as I'll Have Another, the winner of the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, has officially been scratched from Saturday's race, according to trainer Doug O'Neill.

In an interview on the Dan Patrick Show on Friday, O'Neill reiterated that the horse is being removed for precautionary reasons.

O'Neill said, "We ain't taking any chances," and that the scratch "is a bummer, but far from tragic."

O'Neill also suggested that I'll Have Another has run his last professional race.

There were some rumors of an injury to the horse before the announcement was made, but O'Neill did not mention anything specific in that regard. An official press conference has been scheduled for 1 p.m. ET to officially announce the decision.

2012 Belmont Stakes: Dullahan Could Play Spoiler To I'll Have Another's Triple Crown Bid

UPDATE: I'll Have Another has scratched from the Belmont Stakes.

The 144th Belmont Stakes takes place this weekend. Here is a quick news roundup of the main storylines heading into Saturday's race:

All Eyes On I'll Have Another

I'll Have Another is on a mission to become the first horse since 1978 to win the coveted Triple Crown: wins in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and the Belmont Stakes in one year. The Belmont Stakes will be I'll Have Another's ninth race and it is the horse's first race that he has ever been favored in; his odds lead the field at 4-5.

Long Distance For All 12 Horses

The Belmont Stakes' 1.5 mile distance is the longest course among the Triple Crown races. Additionally, this distance is the longest each of the 2012 participant horses have ever raced in their career. Some horses racing Saturday, including Union Rags, are built for certain race distances; Union Rags' progeny is optimized for a race of up to 1/8 miles. Union Rags' trainer Michael Matz said that his horse's mother's side will help him reach the long distance of the Belmont Stakes.

Dullahan Could Play Spoiler

Dullahan impressed onlookers in the chestnut's half-mile workout last Sunday. According to BloodHorse.com, Dullahan looked relaxed and duplicated his pre-race workout from the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes, a race he eventually won. Dullahan finished third in the Kentucky Derby, but did not race in the Preakness.

Belmont Park Race Track: Previewing The Final Leg Of The Triple Crown

The Belmont Stakes takes place on Saturday. Here is a brief preview of what to expect from the Belmont Park Race Track this weekend.

On Friday and Saturday, the temperature at Belmont Park is predicted to be at a high of 80 degrees with a 30% chance of rain. The 430-acre racetrack in Elmont, New York will host the 144th Running of the Belmont Stakes.

Some dditional information on Belmont Park:

Main Course: 1 1/2 Miles
Last Turn to Finish on Main Track: 1,097 feet
Widener Turf Course: 1 5/16 Miles
Inner Turf Course: 1 3/16 Miles
Attendance Capacity: 85,000 - 90,000
Parking Capacity: 18,500 Cars
Trackside Dining: 2,300
Total Seating Capacity: 32,941 (Via: BelmontPark)

Among the three triple crown race tracks, Belmont's course is the longest track in term of distance. While the main course at Belmont is 1.5 miles, the Kentucky Derby's track is 1.25 miles and the Preakness' track is 1 and 3/16 miles. As a result of its length, horses must have experience and enough stamina to win the Belmont Stakes

Belmont Stakes 2012: I'll Have Another Gets 11th Post Position

There have only been 11 horses in the history of the universe to ever claim the triple crown of horse racing, which hasn't been done since 1978. Now I'll Have Another has it's shot at history after taking the first two legs of the crown in 2012, with only a victory at the Belmont Stakes standing in it's way. Now the post positions have been released, leaving I'll Have Another in a bit of a tough spot.

Sitting in the 11th post position I'll Have Another will have an uphill battle to take the triple crown, while Street Life has drawn the rail. Fellow favorite Dullihan sits in the No. 5 post position.

  1. Street Life

The Belmont Stakes 2012: I'll Have Another Tries To Take Triple Crown Next Saturday

The 2012 Belmont Stakes is only seven days away. The third leg in the Triple Crown will come to New York and I'll Have Another will try to take home the prize and write his name in the history books.

Bodemeister and Gemologist are already out of the race, but you can add Alpha to the list of horses that will be scratched from the Belmont. With the field getting thinner, it should come as no surprise that I'll Have Another is the 3/2 favorite to win the Belmont next Saturday and secure horse racing's first Triple Crown win since 1978.

There is certainly no guarantee that I'll Have Annother will win, despite being the betting favorite. Union Rags and Dullahan, both at 6/1, represent significant threats, but as the last 30-plus years have shown us, anything can happen while in pursuit of the Triple Crown.

We will have one more week to wonder. Then it will be I'll Have Another's time to show us if he has one more win in him.
