2012 Kentucky Derby: Results And Recap

The 2012 Kentucky Derby took place, as always, at Churchill Downs in Louisville on Saturday. A crowd of well over 100,000 spectators watched live as the Run for the Roses crowned its 138th champion.

15-1 underdog I'll Have Another stunned everyone with a thrilling win, seeming to come from out of nowhere down the stretch and overtaking betting favorite Bodemeister, who had led for the entire race. Dullahan took third, while the other big favorite in the race, Union Rags, had a very disappointing finish at seventh place.

While it is unlikely that I'll Have Another will be able to piece together the Triple Crown (not even the most dominating horses have been able to accomplish the feat since 1978), all attention will be on the newly-christened celebrity as the Preakness Stakes rapidly approaches.

Here are the full results from the 2012 Kentucky Derby:

1. I'll Have Another -- 15-1
2. Bodemeister -- 4-1
3. Dullahan -- 12-1
4. Went The Day Well -- 30-1

2012 Kentucky Derby Results: I'll Have Another Takes The Victory, Union Rags Disappoints

The 2012 138th Annual Running of the Roses is in the books, and I'll Have Another came in at the head of the pack, winning the 2012 Kentucky Derby in a tight finish. The first jewel of the Triple Crown almost went to Bodemeister, who lead for much of the race. 9/2 favorite Union Rags was not in contention at the finish, as the inside post draw proved to be too much to overcome and Union Rags was stuck in traffic coming down the stretch.

Bodemeister dominated much of the race, having as much as a five length lead as the race came around the final turn. In the far straight Bodemeister also managed to outrun Trinniberg, a horse with a much better sprint But in the end, I'll Have Another showed phenomenal closing speed and consumed that gap, overtaking Bodemeister for the victory. The final odds on I'll Have Another were 14-1.

2012 Kentucky Derby 2012: Cocktails To Watch Horses With [VIDEO]

There have only been three horses ever in the history of the Kentucky Derby to finish the track in under two minutes. The fastest time ever was set back in 1973 by the infamous Secretariat, a blazing time of 1 minute, 59 2/5 seconds, breaking the previous record set by Northern Dancer in 1964.

Though finishing times for non-winners were not recorded in the early 1970's, Sham finished second in 1973 only two and a half lengths behind Secretariat. One 'length' is equivalent to one-fifth of a second in horse racing, meaning Sham finished under two minutes in the same race as Secretariat, only to take second place.

Secretariat's record has stood the test of time, though he completed another amazing feat in the same race. He ran each successive quarter faster than the one before, literally gaining speed around every corner.

The only other sub-two minute finish was set in 2001 by Monarchos with a time of 1:59.97.

Now that you've increased your knowledge, how about a cocktail?

SB Nation's Matt Ufford has been searching for the perfect recipies for some classic southern cocktails like the Mint Julep, Old Fashioned and Whiskey Smash, all staples of the Kentucky Derby. Check out the video below to see how to make them all right.

MINT JULEP:

1. Muddle 3-5 sprigs of mint with simple syrup or sugar (to taste)

2. Add 3 oz. bourbon and crushed ice in layers

3. Garnish with mint

WHISKEY SMASH:

1. Muddle 2-4 pieces lemon, 3-5 sprigs of mint, and simple syrup or sugar to taste

2. Add 2-3 oz. bourbon, stir, and strain (optional)

3. Garnish with mint and/or lemon

OLD FASHIONED:

1. Mix 1/2 oz. simple syrup with 2 dashes bitters OR Muddle 1 sugar cube in a splash of water and 2 dashes bitters

2. Add 2 oz. bourbon (or rye) with ice, stir

3. Garnish with twist of lemon or orange

2012 Kentucky Derby Picks: Daddy Nose Best Might Be Better Bet Than Bodemeister

Among the Arizona horses, there are three potential possibilites. There's the favorite in Bodemeister, the mid-range sleeper in Daddy Nose Best, and the long underdog in Liaison.

Let's face it, Bodemeister has really short odds at 4-1. Not really who you want to be laying your money on such a big favorite, since the payout isn't that significant. You're probably better putting your money off on mid-level favorites, like Daddy Nose Best.

Daddy Nose Best seems pretty solid at 15-1. He's played very well the past few weeks and coming from off the pace, a style that works well in the Derby and could come in handy when trying to come from behind in Churchill Downs. Liaison is a long shot and probably shouldn't be trusted with your money. So don't.

2012 Kentucky Derby: Sabercat Could Prove Lucrative Bet Come Saturday

With the post positions set, the 2012 Kentucky Derby is just about ready to get under way on Sunday at Churchill Downs. All that's missing is your hard earned money placed as bets on a group of immaculate thoroughbreds.

One such horse is Sabercat, a name that you certainly should know before you do any of your betting. Here is some more inforamtion on Sabercat:

Horse: Sabercat

Trainer: Steve Asmussen

Pedigree: By Bluegrass Cat out of a Forty Niner mare (Miner's Blessing)

Career Record: 8-3-0-2

Career Earnings: $782,849

Notable Races: G1-Arkansas Derby (3rd); G2-Rebel (8th); G3-Delta Jackpot (1st)

Here's is SB Nation's resident horse racing expert Mark Gardner with the commentary:

Sabercat, like Dullahan and Rousing Sermon, is a closer that should benefit from a fast pace in the early stages of Saturday's Derby. Additionally, this colt did improve in the Arkansas Derby after a poor effort in the Rebel, and it's always better to see a colt run an improving race going into Louisville.

At 30/1 on the morning line, this colt might be a horse to include on trifecta and superfecta tickets in the hopes he can get a piece of the prize at a big price.

Certainly a name to keep in mind when filling out you ticket on Saturday.

Kentucky Derby 2012 Odds: Bodemeister Odds-On Favorite At 4-1, Daddy Knows Best Close Behind

The newest 2012 Kentucky Derby odds have been released, and a horse with Arizona ties leads the way. Bodemeister is owned by Bob Baffert, who was born in Southern Arizona, and he currently seems like the favorite to win this contest.

Bodemeister, who recently won the Arkansas Derby, is the favorite so far with 4-1 odds. Bodemeister is joined by Union Rags, who is slightly behind at 9-2 odds.

The other two horses aren't quite in such good shape. Daddy Nose Best is stuck at 15-1, which places him in the upper tier overall. Liaison (another Baffert-owned horse) is a 50-1 longshot, so if you really want to go high on a horse that probably doesn't have a shot, there's the one.

2012 Kentucky Derby: Bodemeister, Daddy Nose Best, Liaison All Have Arizona Ties

There are three horses with Arizona ties at the 2012 Kentucky Derby. Bodemeister and Liaison have trainer Bob Baffert, who was born in Nogales, Arizona at the southern part of the state. Baffert now lives in California. Daddy Nose Best will be rode by jockey Garrett Gomez, who was born in Tucson, Arizona.

Bodemeister is currently considered the potential overall favorite, with 9/2 odds. Chris Korman of the Chicago Tribune has this report.

He ran past the Arkansas Derby field, winning by 91/2 lengths. Though there's concern about his maturity and conditioning — as would be the case for any lightly raced colt — Bodemeister has captured the imagination of those seeking the next Triple Crown winner. He's that fast. Baffert has won the Kentucky Derby three times, most recently with War Emblem in 2002, and won the Preakness in each of those years. Owned by Zayat Stables, Bodemeister has been working at Churchill Downs since his win in Arkansas.

Daddy Nose Best has 15/1 odds. Gomez wrote a little bit about his horse and how he came to be his jockey on his ESPN Horse Racing Blog.

Like I said, this is a nice young horse with a great future ahead of him. When they first gave me the mount, Scott Blasi sent me a picture of the colt and I was really impressed. He's a good-looking little horse and his past two races were solid improvements, moving forward -- the El Camino Real Derby win in February and the Sunland Derby victory in March.

I worked the colt on April 23; he'll work again tomorrow but I won't be aboard -- I get to watch this time. That was just a getting-to-know-you ride, and we're good to go. When I worked him, he handled really well. We went in company with Z Dager, who is multiple graded stakes placed, and "Daddy" put him away fairly easily turning for home. He finished up well and came home handily about a length in front of the other horse. People who watched his work were very impressed. The Daily Racing Form clocked him in six furlongs in 1:13.70, galloping out seven-eighths in 1:27.10, and gave him the "Work of the Day" mention online. Hopefully he goes as well tomorrow and it'll be "all systems go."

Liaison currently has the longest odds at 40/1 odds. The Associated Press has more on how Liaison came to run in the Derby.

Trainer Bob Baffert only needed to see Liaison run in Kentucky compared to California to decide to give the horse a chance in the Kentucky Derby.

"I'm going to run him," Baffert said Tuesday. "I love the way he went over this track. What a difference."

Liaison, sired by Indian Charlie, is coming off a string of poor performances in Santa Anita, Calif. The 3-year-old bay colt owned by Arnold Zetcher hasn't finished in the top three of any race so far in 2012 after winning the CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park in December.
