For the second straight week, the ASU baseball team traveled North for a Pac-12 road series. The Sun Devis had better luck this past weekend, as ASU took two of three from the Washington State Cougars.
Balanced hitting fueled Arizona State (26-17, 11-10) on Friday night, as four different Devils had RBI's. Andrew Aplin went 2-4 with two RBI, both Deven Marrero and Joey DeMichele went 3-5 with an RBI each. The Sun Devils collected 10 hits in total Friday evening.
Brady Rodgers (7-2) picked up his seventh victory of the season on Friday. The junior right-hander threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits. Jake Barrett collected his fifth save, and Matthew Dunbar pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Rodgers.
On Saturday, the day belonged to sophomore right-hander Trevor Williams. Williams threw a complete game shutout allowing, seven hits and striking out four. Williams has also not walked a batter in 25 innings, and picked up his team-leading eighth victory of the season.
The Cougars were able to salvage the series on Sunday with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth. Down 6-4 heading into the top of the ninth, Abe Ruiz led off the inning with a home run to pull the Sun Devils within one. Freshman Nathaniel Causey came through with a pitch-hit, two-out RBI single to tie the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, Washington State first baseman Taylor Ard hit a walk-off single with two-outs off of Jake Barrett to give the Cougars a 7-6 victory.
