Arizona State Football Looking To Return To Camp Tontozona

Camp Tontozona was an institution of the Arizona State football program from 1960-2008, providing the Sun Devils with a NFL-like training camp offsite for their upcoming season. But thanks to the efforts of head coach Todd Graham and Vice President for University Athletics/Athletics Director Steve Patterson, 'Camp T' is looking to be resurrected for practice and scrimmage beginning this fall.

Set in the serene landscape of Payson, Ariz., the camp borders the beuatiful Tonto National Forest, the ideal location to get your mind right before a grueling season. Coach Graham knows the importance of this camp to bring unity not only to the players and coaches, but the fans and alumni of the program as well:

"I love the tradition of college football," says Graham. "That is one of the reasons I coach at the collegiate level. Camp Tontozona is one of the famous icons in the history of college football. I want to take my first team there because the tradition begins at Tontozona, just like it did in 1960. Every player, every coach and many fans begin each season in the tall pines northeast of Payson. Coach Frank Kush had a vision. It worked well then and it will again. When I visited earlier this year I saw a lot of potential. But a lot of work needs to be completed in order to make it happen."

"Camp Tontozona unites Sun Devil football players from every generation and we want to return to that tradition," says Patterson. " We invite former football players, fans and anyone that believes in Camp T and what it stands for to participate by donating money or services. We need the Sun Devil Football family to unite behind this goal."

The campaign, appropriately titled "Return to Camp T," will need about $150,000 in order to make it happen, and is looking for fundraising to make it a reality. If the funds are met by June 1, Camp T will run from August 14-18, with a scrimmage set for the 18th. If the goal is not met, funds will be applied to a return to Camp Tontozona for the 2013 season.

Donors of $100 or more receive a "Return to Camp T" bumper sticker, and $250 or more will earn a "Return to Camp T" T-shirt. Donors of $500 or more will receive a T-shirt and are eligible to go on a turnaround trip to the scrimmage at Camp Tontozona. Any donations that exceed the $150,000 mark will be applied toward the Sun Devil Football program as a whole. All donations will go through the Sun Devil Club and are tax-deductible. Those who want to contribute can visit www.thesundevils.com or contact Kevin Miniefield of The Sun Devil Club at 480-727-6644 or at kevin.miniefield@asu.edu.

Lisa Love And Arizona St. Will Negotiate 100K Plus Buyout, According To Report

Not all the details are clear in Lisa Love's departure from Arizona State on Wednesday, including how much more money she will pocket on her way out.

As Vice President of Athletics, Love was under contract at Arizona St. through 2014.

According to this tweet by Doug Haller, the Arizona Republic Arizona St. beat reporter, the school would pay all of her salary for two more years if she was fired without cause.

ASUDevils.com, a Rivals.com affiliate reports that the Love and the school are currently negotiating a contract buy-out, meaning the school would not end up paying her entire salary:

The contract of Love's replacement Steve Patterson has yet to be announced according to Haller.

Steve Patterson, ASU Athletic Director

The Arizona St. Sun Devils have a new athletic director in Steve Patterson. Can he provide a stronger grip on the athletic department than what Lisa Love provided?

Steve Patterson was mostly recently the managing director of the ASU athletic marketing division Sun Devil Sports Group. Patterson also had a lot of fund raising responsibilities. Before his time in Tempe, Patterson worked in upper management mainly in Houston. He worked with the Rockets in the NBA, the Aeros in minor-league hockey, the Texans in the NFL, and before those stints the Trail Blazers. He also set up his own firm in Pro Sports Consulting in November 2007.

It's a pretty impressive resume, but no major college experience out there. Patterson might have a bit of a learning curve to deal with.

Arizona State Coaches React To Lisa Love's Departure, Steve Patterson's Promotion

The news of Lisa Love's departure from Arizona State University spread quickly. With every dismissal, people within the program will naturally have mixed feelings. There is always regret for the person leaving the program, especially when one is let go. However, there is also excitement for the person taking over, especially when the person is already within the organization. Such is the case with the promotion that Steve Patterson gets, as he now takes over as the Vice President of Athletics.

Some of the coaches in the Sun Devil athletic program have already commented on Patterson's new responsibilities and also about Love's departure.

Todd Graham - ASU Football Head Coach
"I am ultra excited about the future of Sun Devil football," says Head Coach Todd Graham. "Steve Patterson is a proven leader and his vision is in line with mine for this university and Sun Devil Athletics. Lisa Love is a great person and I enjoyed working with her. I wish her nothing but the best and I know she wants the same thing for Sun Devil athletics."

Louie Quintana - ASU Men's Cross Country Head Coach
"I'm really excited about what Steve Patterson brings to the program, especially with his professional sports experience. That sort of vision is what we need here at Arizona State. I'm excited to be a part of that and continue to compete at and win championships for this university. That being said, I enjoyed working with Lisa Love and wish her the very best in her future endeavors."

Clint Myers - Softball Head Coach
"In the short time I have known Steve Patterson he has displayed a very positive leadership skill that ASU will benefit from. He has shown to have a visualization and a path that will take us to even greater heights." -

Jason Watson - Volleyball Head Coach
"I'm eager to assist Steve in his plans for Sun Devil Athletics. His enthusiasm and commitment to excellence will have an extremely positive influence on our student-athletes."

Charli Turner Thorne - Women's Basketball Head Coach
"Our Sun Devil Nation can rest assured that Steve Patterson will absolutely bring us tranformative leadership to help our student-athletes and coaches have all they need to excel and make them proud. He has a tremendous competitive spirit that drive all around him to be their best. I appreciate so much how Lisa's passionate dedicated leadership continued to move our Department forward in ways that did not always show up on the scoreboard and through challenging financial times. I feel very blessed to have learned under Lisa."

Tim Esmay - Baseball Head Coach
"The way Steve Patterson has conducted himself since he arrived at Arizona State gives me great confidence going forward as Sun Devil Athletics continues to grow in positive ways. We have a rich tradition at Arizona State and I am convinced Steve will not only uphold that, but help usher in a new era of success."

Tim Mickelson - Men's Golf Head Coach
"Steve Patterson is a proven leader in athletics and he shares the same vision as so many others at this university, to be the best in the Pac-12 which translates to competing for national titles. I wish Lisa Love all the best in her future and thank her for giving me the opportunity to coach at a place that means so much to my family and I. I look forward to working with Steve as he has great vision for Arizona State."

Greg Kraft - Director of Track & Field/Cross Country
"Steve Patterson has a unique skill set with his work with the Reliant Stadium and the different entities he became accustomed to at the professional level. I think that skill set makes him the logical choice for us as we head down the road with collegiate athletics. With the ever-changing landscape of our department, our profession is changing daily and we need to be able to move forward with those changes. Change is inevitable and I think that this will be a positive change as we move forward and one that Steve is very capable of handling. I wish Lisa Love nothing but the best as we all move forward."

Naturally, they are not going to come out in public and ridicule the move. They all need him to do his job well. Additionally, he will be their boss. So there is reason to speak positively.

However, it does seem apparent that Patterson already has the respect of Sun Devil Athletics. That is a great start.

Discuss this further over at House of Sparky.
