In Pullman Washington Saturday night, the Arizona State Sun Devils started terribly, scoring only eight first half points and were unable to complete the season sweep over the Washington State Cougars. The Sun Devils played much better in the second, but the deficit was too much as the Devils left town having lost 72-50.
The eight points allowed by the Cougars was the lowest point total allowed in a half since the introduction of the shot clock.
ASU went on a run to start the second half, outscoring Washington State 23-7 to pull within 12. But a four-point play ended the rally and the Cougars controlled the rest of the way.
DaVonte Lacy scored 17 points and Brock Motum added 16 for the Cougars. The only player to score in double figures for the Sun Devils was guard Chris Colvin. He had 18 in the losing effort.
Washington State improved to 14-13 (6-9), while ASU fell to 8-19 (4-11),
Yes, you read that right. The 8-18 Arizona State men's basketball team actually has a chance to sweep a team. And looking down the schedule with only four games left to play, it's probably safe to say that if they can't win this one, then they might not win another.
The Cougars (13-13) have lost five of their last seven, and have little but pride left to play for, much like the Devils. ASU put on one of their most complete performances of the season against them back on January 28 in a 71-67 win. Considering that they were without Trent Lockett too there is good reason to believe that this one will at least be a closely contested battle to the finish.
