ASU vs. UCLA final: Devils lose 45-43

For the second year in a row, the UCLA Bruins and Arizona State Sun Devils came down to a final field goal.

Last year it was ASU missing late to lose the game, while this year it was Ka'imi Fairbairn sealing it for UCLA in the final seconds. With the 45-43 win, UCLA becomes bowl eligible in October for the first time since 2005. Down 14-0 in the first quarter, UCLA came back to go up 21-17 at halftime and managed to hold on through a back-and-forth second half.

All told, the game featured four lead changes and more than 1,000 yards of offense. ASU had 535 total yards, with Taylor Kelly completing 25-of-35 passes for 315 yards. Brett Hundley wasn't far behind, with 274 yards on 19-of-31 attempts. Both teams had four passing touchdowns and one interception. Damien Thigpen was the big receiver for UCLA, with 92 yards on three catches including two touchdowns, while D.J. Foster had seven catches for 107 for ASU.

ASU's defense managed to sack Hundley seven times, with Carl Bradford picking up three of them and Junior Onyeali adding two. Hundley managed to execute in spite of the pressure, including key passes that put UCLA in field goal range on the final drive. UCLA's defense didn't manage much in the way of backfield pressure, but Datone Jones and the rest of the front seven came through with some stops at key moments.

Box Score Hero: As has frequently been the case with UCLA, Johnathan Franklin carried the day. He had 164 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns, and was crucial in grinding out yards in the fourth quarter and on the final drive.

Rankings Ramifications: UCLA fell out of the rankings early in the season and is unlikely to climb back in at this point.

But Did They Cover? At +7, UCLA clearly covered the spread.

Next Week's Schedule: The Bruins next host the Arizona Wildcats, while the Sun Devils will head on the road to take on the Oregon St. Beavers.

Devils left devastated after 45-43 loss to UCLA

The Arizona State Sun Devils had their impressive comeback all but in the books before UCLA QB Brett Hundley lead his team back for a game-winning field goal as time expired.

Devils trailing 35-26 with 15 minutes left

Both offenses brought their A-game in the third quarter but UCLA's was noticeably sharper and the Bruins now lead Arizona State, 35-26, with 15 minutes left to play.

After the Bruins accidentally chose to kick instead of defer on the opening kickoff, the Sun Devils got the luxury of starting with the ball again to start a half. And Arizona State wouldn't waste the free possession either. QB Taylor Kelly found RB D.J. Foster for a 54-yard catch-and-run on the first snap and the Devils got three points froma a 31-yard Jon Mora field goal.

Clearly upset about the whole coin flip debacle and thirsty for revenge, the Bruins scored on their first play of the half as QB Brett Hundley found the speedy Damien Thigpen for a 65-yard touchdown.

The second act fireworks didn't stop on ASU's next possession as Foster continued to provide this offense a spark with a 19-yard reception and a 13-yard scamper. RB Marion Grice would then catch the defense napping on a screen pass, following his blocker with some impressive balancing for a 20-yard score. The two point conversion would be unsuccessful though with the Bruins playing some tight defense to hold onto their 28-26 lead.

UCLA extended that cushion when they got the ball as TE Joseph Fauria brought down a four-yard touchdown reception with an acrobatic grab.

The Devils' ended their next drive with a failed fourth down conversion but the Bruins were only able to move backwards after the turnover on downs. The quarter ended Grice getting a hard-earned one-yard run to successfully convert another fourth down attempt.

Costly Kelly INT gives UCLA a 21-17 halftime lead

A head-scratching interception from Taylor Kelly has given UCLA the edge over Arizona State at halftime as the Bruins now lead 21-17. Kelly has gone 9-of-15 with 96 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the first 30 minutes of action while RB D.J. Foster has looked simply explosive with 70 total yards on 11 touches.

The Sun Devils started slow with a three-and-out on their opening drive but a misread punt from UCLA's Steven Manfro proved to be the spark they needed. The Devils recovered the fumble and Taylor Kelly didn't waste it the takeaway, finding Kevin Ozier in space for a seven-yard touchdown.

That momentum continued to ASU's next possession with Marion Grice finding pay dirt from two-yards out to give the Devils a quick 14-0 lead.

Apparently that was the wake up call the Bruins needed though because their next two drives were steady yet effective.

RB Johnathan Franklin capped off a 12-play drive on their next possession with a three-yard rushing touchdown to get UCLA on the board. The Bruins didn't flinch after Josh Hubner booted a career-high 68-yard punt on their next go around either. Assisted by a roughing the passer call on Junior Onyeali, QB Brett Hundley found Devin Fuller for a 15-yard touchdown on a middle post to put the finishing touches on a 98-yard drive.

Arizona State recaptured the lead with a 36-yard field goal from new kicker Jon Mora to start the second quarter. But it was a missed opportunity that defined the score as a 11-yard James Morrison touchdown reception was called back because of a Brice Schwab hold.

After trading some punts, CB Deveron Carr made a huge interception off a UCLA flea flicker for the first turnover of the game. But two possessions later, Taylor Kelly made an ill-advised throw from his own endzone as he tried to avoid a safety. That floater was easily intercepted by Dalton Hilliard with a little over a minute left in the half and Franklin then cradled the rock in from five yards away to give UCLA a 21-17 halftime lead.

Luckily, since UCLA accidentally elected to kick instead of defer on the opening kickoff, the Devils will be getting to ball again to start the second half after also receiving the opening kickoff.

Devils, Bruins tied at 14 after first quarter

Arizona State got off to another hot start against UCLA Saturday but the Bruins bounced back to tie the game up at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Sun Devils opened the game with a three-and-out but were assisted by Stefan Manfro misreading the punt and were able to recover a fumble on UCLA's 13. Taylor Kelly then found Kevin Ozier and the wide receiver earned himself a seven-yard touchdown with a nice move.

After the Bruins opened with a three-and-out of their own, Arizona State began to get in a rhythm with a 10-play drive lead by some solid bursts from RB D.J. Foster. The Devils capped it off with RB Marion Grice carrying it in from two-yards away to give ASU a quick 14-0 lead.

On UCLA's second drive, they finally got their act together. RB Johnathan Franklin pounded in the ball from three yards away to put the finishing touches on a 13-play drive that included a fourth down conversion.

Following a career-high 68-yard punt from Josh Hubner, the Bruins next drive wasn't nearly as effective as QB Brett Hundley missed a wide open Damien Thigpen on third down. But after a Junior Onyeali roughing the passer call gave UCLA new life, Hundley fired in a 15-yard touchdown to Devin Fuller to tie the score up.

The Devils were driving when the first quarter ended and currently have the ball on UCLA's 44.
