Cardinals Quarterback Options Narrow As Big Names Come Off The Board

And then there were two...or maybe three at most if you are in the Marc Bulger camp.

↵

The Arizona Cardinals options certainly aren't what they were just a few days ago with Matt Hasselbeck (Tennesse), Tarvaris Jackson (Seattle), Carson Palmer (Retired), Donovan McNabb (Minnesota), and Tyler Thigpen (Buffalo) all off the board. And yes, even Matt Leinart seems to have found a new home with his old coach in Seattle team in Houston.

↵

The good news is that the (supposedly) top two targets to be next in a long line of great Cardinals' quarterbacks -- Kevin Kolb and Kyle Orton -- are still sitting somewhere waiting to find out where they will be playing.

↵

Arizona might have gambled by waiting to see where the other chips feel instead of jumping early on a deal for Kolb but that play looks like it played out in the Cardinals favor for a change.

↵

Multiple speculative reports say the Philadelphia Eagles wanted both a first round draft pick and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie for Kolb which is a steep price to pay for a quarterback with such a limited track record. Now the Cardinals can play the Eagles (Kolb) and the Denver Broncos (Orton) off of each other. Common sentiment is that Orton is the better option anyway and can be had for much less.

↵

At his Tuesday press conference, head coach Ken Whisenhunt said that he didn't see a deal getting done immediately and while he wouldn't address specific names, he also didn't deny the obvious need for upgrading the position.

↵

By waiting for the initial frenzy, the Cardinals seem to have positioned themselves well for the final negotiation with Philadelphia or Denver. Now it's time to get a deal done and we should finally have an answer soon.
