UFC takes a big step in mainstreaming itself Saturday night with a major MMA fight card, from which its main event will be aired live on FOX.
The free FOX channel. Not FOX Sports or any cable affiliates.
The main event features former ASU wrestling standout and Yuma-raised heavyweight Cain Velasquez, who holds the UFC heavyweight belt and who faces Junior Dos Santos of Brazil for the title. On Wednesday, the two fighters and UFC president Dana White held the pre-fight press conference in Los Angeles.
White can’t wait to open up UFC up to millions of potential new fans who will be able to watch, and he called Velasquez -Santos the biggest fight in the history of the popular sport.
“I’m ready to go out there. I’ve had a long layoff but I’m excited to be here again fighting in the L.A. area,” Velasquez said.
Velasquez is back from rehabilitating a shoulder injury and is 9-0 in his career.
Velasquez got a lot of love from the Mexicans and Mexican Americans in the crowd at the event, and said he is inspired by the hard-working spirit of his people which he carries into his fights.
