Arizona Wildcats Men's Basketball Program Penalized By NCAA

The University of Arizona is facing NCAA sanctions against their men's basketball program, The Arizona Republic reports.

For committing what the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions is calling "major violations," the Wildcats are facing two years probation, scholarship reductions, recruiting restrictions, vacating wins and disassociation with an event promoter. The probation will run through July 28, 2012.

According to the committee, there were a number of occasions in which violations occurred and center around three Arizona Cactus Classic tournaments and a GOAZCATS.com Showdown, which the promoter in question was allowed to conduct on campus.

Former coach Lute Olson is accused of failing to promote a compliant atmosphere, and the university is being called out for failing to monitor for violations.
