SB Nation Mercury Phoenix Mercury

Mercury Run Out Of Town By Seattle, 97-74

+2

Temeka Johnson and the Phoenix Mercury got into Seattle tonight to take on the 7-1 Storm.

So much for any offensive momentum coming off the last game. The Mercury were held by the Storm defense to only 36% shooting and were man-handled on the boards, 47-32.

Not a strong showing for the defending WNBA champs, to say the least.

Update

Phoenix Flooded By Storm

Seattle was up 87-48 at the end of three quarters. Game over.

From the recap at Swish Appeal:

“They played great,” said Mercury coach Corey Gaines. “We made two runs at the to cut it to 5. They withstood those runs. They had a 10-0 spurt going into the half and they kinda closed the deal right there. We came out second half, they hit a three, 18. Lighting it up the rest of the night…It was just a bad game. It was a bad game. That happens.”

No matter which side you look at this game from, it was pretty much over after three quarters, whether it be because of poor play from the Mercury or outstanding play from the Storm.

As a veteran team, Gaines said the Mercury know it’s just one game and that there will be plenty of others, especially a team like the Storm who Gaines said they will have to go through if they expect to repeat.

Not quite time to push the panic button but with the way the Mercury have been playing, it might be a good idea to locate it.

Update

Mercury Down Big In Seattle, 50-35 End Of 1st Half

The Mercury are going to need to get their act in gear fast if they want to catch the Storm. They started the second quarter with a strong defensive effort and cut the lead to 5 but the Storm fired back and closed the half strong to take a 15-point lead into the locker room.

Swin Cash leads all scorers with 11 and Temeka Johnson leads the Mercury with 9. The Storm are dominating on the glass, 24-15.

Mercury Seek Road Revenge Over Storm, 6:00 pm AZT

The Mercury (3-3) will need to step up their game tonight if they hope to close the gap on the Seattle Storm who are the class of the WNBA right now with a 7-1 record.

The Mercury might be helped by the fact that the Storm played a close game in LA last night so they will have to travel home and play tonight on the second of a back-to-back.

The Storm defeated the Mercury in Phoenix two weeks ago in an overtime game.
