Dan Haren couldn't finish a complete game, and Aaron Heilman came in to let the last three runs cross as the Cardinals beat the Diamondbacks on Monday night via the walk-off error. Holy nightmare, batman.

Diamondbacks Blow 2 Run 9th Inning Lead In Comedy Of Errors

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) – Aaron Heilman and Adam LaRoche committed costly errors in the ninth inning, the latter of which scored two runs to give the Cardinals a 6-5 win over Arizona, spoiling a sparkling night for Diamondbacks starting pitcher Dan Haren.

Haren pitched into the ninth inning and belted the go-ahead homer leading off the seventh, but Arizona couldn’t hold on and lost for the 17th time in their last 20 road games.

Yadier Molina and Brendan Ryan singled to start the bottom of the ninth. Heilman (2-2) then entered from the bullpen to face pinch-hitter Adam Wainwright, who put down a sacrifice bunt to the left side of the infield. Heilman bare-handed the ball, but his throw to third base bounced and was wide of the base, allowing pinch-runner Jaime Garcia to score for a 5-4 margin.

The Diamondbacks played their infield in and it initially paid off when Randy Winn grounded out to shortstop, keeping the runners at second and third. Skip Schumaker then grounded a ball sharply to first base. Instead of stepping on the base and giving up the tying run, LaRoche came home with the throw, but it bounced by catcher Miguel Montero, giving the Cardinals the win as Ryan and Wainwright scored easily.

Haren was on target for the win after allowing 10 hits and five runs — three earned, but the 2001 first-round pick by the Cardinals was derailed thanks to the miscues.

Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter, who came into the game 5-0 over his last eight appearances and 4-0 in 10 lifetime games (nine starts) against Arizona, was charged with six hits and three runs over seven innings.

LaRoche and Mark Reynolds each hit two-run homers for Arizona, while Felipe Lopez had two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals.

St. Louis scored twice in the first inning as Schumaker scored on a wild pitch and Lopez came home on an Albert Pujols double.

LaRoche homered in the sixth inning to tie the game and Haren led off the seventh with his second career homer – a 408-foot blast to center field for a 3-2 Arizona edge.

LaRoche walked with two outs in the eighth and Jason Motte (3-2) then entered from the bullpen to relieve Trever Miller, but Reynolds homered to right field.

Lopez singled in Winn in the bottom of the eighth to set up the crazy finish.

Carpenter walked four batters and had five strikeouts…Haren, who walked one hitter and had six strikeouts, is batting .435 (20-for-46) with seven RBI this season…Ryan Ludwick (strained right calf) and David Freese (right ankle) missed the game for the Cardinals, while Stephen Drew (sore left knee) sat out for Arizona.

Diamondbacks Recapture Spirit, Face St. Louis, 5:10 p.m. AZT

(Sports Network) - Chris Carpenter shoots for win No. 10 this evening and tries to get the St. Louis Cardinals back into first place, as they open a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals, though, enter tonight's matchup having dropped three of four after losing two of three to Kansas City over the weekend, but still sit just a half-game back of the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Central.

With the Reds starting a series against Philadelphia, the Cardinals are hoping to take advantage of a Diamondbacks team that is 16 games under .500 and 15 1/2 games back in the NL West. Especially with Carpenter on the hill tonight. The former NL Cy Young Award winner has won his last five decisions and is 9-1 on the year to go along with a 2.63 earned run average.

Carpenter got the win in his last trip to the hill on Wednesday in Toronto, as he held the Jays to just three hits over eight scoreless innings.

"He made a ton of good pitches and competes like a maniac. He does that in every start," Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa said of Carpenter.

He did not get a decision against the Diamondbacks back on June 13, but is 4-0 lifetime against them with a 2.36 ERA in 10 games, nine of which have been starts.

Carpenter will be trying to help the Cards get back on track after a rough weekend against the Royals, who denied St. Louis a series win with a 10-3 win on Sunday.

Rookie Jaime Garcia (7-4) had his worst outing of the season, lasting just two-plus innings and giving up five runs on four hits and two walks. Albert Pujols and Colby Rasmus each slugged home run No. 16 of the season for St. Louis in the loss.

Arizona will send its ace to the hill this evening as well in righty Dan Haren, who is 7-6 with a 4.65 ERA. Haren lost his second straight start on Tuesday to the New York Yankees, who reached him for three runs and six hits in seven innings.

Haren's last win came at the expense of the Cardinals on June 12 and is a perfect 4-0 in four starts against them with a 3.72 ERA. Drafted in the second round by the Cardinals in 2001, Haren has already beaten his former club twice this season.

Arizona managed a rare road win on Sunday in St. Petersburg, as Gerardo Parra hit the game-deciding two-run homer, and Rodrigo Lopez pitched six innings of two-hit, one-run ball, to help the Diamondbacks top the Tampa Bay Rays, 2-1, in the finale of a three-game interleague set.

Lopez (4-6) put forth a strong effort despite walking five batters along with three strikeouts and picked up his second straight win.

Rusty Ryal tripled and scored on Parra's second homer of the season during a pivotal fifth frame for the Diamondbacks, who took two of the three games in the series.

However, it was just Arizona's third road win in its last 19 games.

The Diamondbacks have split their six games with the Cardinals this season.
